Exactly the “essence”, because I don’t want to call everything that happens “gameplay”. You, of course, in the role of the protagonist and main character, must go through the thousand rooms of the manor owned by “Spooky”, the ghost who calls us the player, partially breaking the fourth wall. Initially, sometimes even after beating the game, you don’t know “Why are we here??", "Why do we have to go through a thousand rooms?" and "How do we get through these thousand rooms?».

As soon as we see Spooky herself, it seems that “horror” is not about this game. Cartoon art, ridiculous graphics from a butoh game from the year 2000, a vague goal and jump scares that look like stickers for a children’s book. But after the first fifty rooms this feeling gradually begins to go away. Let’s look at everything in more detail..

In many games with a truly good plot, you can read the rules of the world in ordinary rooms. But this is an indie put together on the knee, which means that even if there are 1000 rooms, they are not full of variety, even after the HD update.

Most often, the rooms are an “L”-shaped corridor or tunnel leading to the same room.

Naturally, if the variety ended with similar tunnels of different shapes, then the game would not receive high ratings, but it received them. In some rooms there are “beds”, rectangles of different colors, vaguely reminiscent of the familiar bed, tables and chairs, full-sized, square, with 4 legs. And before HD, you could cut yourself on your leg or back, if it weren’t for a game. Pictures that suggest depressive thoughts are also often found.

A distinctive feature of the HD update is inclined surfaces. They create a special atmosphere of a real mansion. But such architecture will not be encountered after the first save room.

The save room is an elevator. Despite the presence of windows, only the ground is visible through them. This elevator creates a sense of progression, taking us lower and lower. Dark fog, like in other rooms, is completely absent. Saving occurs due to interaction with a moderately dark purple cross, with a luminous element. Posters also attract attention, simply with words or with a touching, or not so, picture.

After descending, the next five hundred rooms, you will not see beds and windows. They are replaced by torn paintings, blank walls and skeletons or parts thereof, found in almost every second room, which, like candles, have no depth, that is, 2D.

New ones will now be more likely to encounter bars, various fences and abyss rooms, and so on for the next hundred rooms. Gradually the walls and floor will be slightly different, various intricate tunnels will come to the fore, and then exactly the opposite.

Room with telephone. There is nothing special besides the fact that you can call on the phone and hear a woman’s voice. You might think that this is someone familiar with the protagonist, but it seems to me that if this were so, the hero would answer, at a minimum.

White rooms. This is a room with portraits of four YouTubers and a room with a riddle. Nobody should be chasing you in them, all the times I saw it, and I went through it myself, there was no monster.

Computer. Its purpose is clear from the notes so generously scattered throughout the levels and to which we will return later. Cat-dos, a big box with a red screen that will literally gouge your eyes.

Unfortunately, some problems arose, what was recorded on the screens, and as it turned out later, not only the inscriptions on the screens were not visible. I had to, first, look for photos on the Internet, and later, install another version of the game and go through it all over again.

Now to the main thing… There is no single storyline. But this doesn’t stop us from telling the story of the monsters that we will meet along the way.

As mentioned above – screamers. Cardboard literally cut out and stuck on the walls. They don’t look threatening, moreover, if they didn’t suddenly appear and prevent you from going further along the corridor, they would be absolutely useless. Again, ordinary cardboard and pictures, which will not scare even children, but in the name of variety, scary pictures were also added.

You can understand that he is already flying towards you through other green puddles that will slow you down as soon as you step on it. It’s impossible to avoid puddles in narrow corridors, but the monster isn’t very dangerous, so a few lost seconds won’t hurt you too much.

The monster itself looks like a man, lower part, legs, who was chopped off. The ribs, or rather their outlines, are visible through the liquefied substance, but the first thing you will notice is the white teeth, slightly protruding forward. With one hand he reaches out to the victim, he simply doesn’t have the other; the hand without a hand can be clearly seen in the footage.

When you die, you will see eyes looking at you from the green wall, and an open. in an attempt to eat your mouths. The same wall occurs when you turn on the game and with a warning. In my humble opinion, this wall and mouth mean that you are now part of this strange green liquid. Having torn the protagonist into pieces, the monster swallowed him, turning him into a part of himself, along with those one hundred and forty people who did not have time to escape from him.

Of course, with this interpretation, the warning at the beginning means the same thing. Which I think is true. But in addition to the picture, there is also an inscription that only confirms this interpretation:

I know what you have done and what you will do again.
But it’s okay because now I’m inside you.
We are one, but I am many..

In addition to being the very first monster, it is also the least developed in terms of backstory. But I have a version of where this slurry came from. But for this you need to know more about Spooky and what happened in the mansion. But if you want, then..

Spooky is a ghost, which means she was human. She had parents who worked in the hospital, at the very bottom of the mansion. Details can be found in the supplement. What does this liquid monster have to do with it?? This is just a theory, so draw your own conclusions. Liquid – is a mixture of energy or plasma, as can be understood from the description. In the seven hundred and tenth room, they killed people to extract energy from them and all for the sake of resurrecting Spooky. Who died under strange circumstances. What if the remaining energy and/or plasma from the ghosts subsequently accumulated in this very thin monster?? Yes, it is assumed that all the energy belonged to Spooky and the Beef Demon, but this does not mean that the evaporated remains could not gather and turn into a similar lump.

Or, there are suggestions that the romantic writer is this very monster. I’m going to reveal this theory in more detail, but a little later. The lack of a backstory for this monster is a blank check for theorizing, drawing up various crazy theories.

All this creates an eerie atmosphere, despite the relative brightness of the room and the absence of an obvious threat.
