Two weeks after the NFC project Cityzi was launched in Nice, France, hundreds of citizens have used Samsung mobile phones to pay for bus and light rail tickets and earn points when shopping. The Cityzi NFC project also includes smart posters that provide travel information and planned contactless payments. Airtag provides platforms and software for railway and bus company Veolia Transport and participating merchants. It matches the unique ID code of each mobile phone’s NFC RFID module with the bus card or membership card account. Currently, about 3 retailers and 10 stores are participating in this project: fast food chain La Croissanterie, movie and television product store Game and jeans retailer Rica Lewis. Approximately 4,000 participants have NFC mobile phones. In addition, participating stores also provide customers with NFC membership cards so that they do not have to buy mobile phones. Like mobile phones, membership cards will use Airtag software to track the cardholder’s purchase history and provide appropriate discounts.
Users who wish to use a contactless phone can first go to the Orange France Telecom store in Nice (5 stores in total) to purchase a Samsung S5230 touch screen phone equipped with NFC function. Users participating in the project can purchase mobile phones for less than $12.

The mobile phone is equipped with an NFC chip, which can be used as an RFID reader and tag, and a SIM card, which can store NFC transaction data. Airtag provides some options, such as viewing the account information corresponding to the mobile phone’s NFC chip ID code, purchasing a one-way ticket or a monthly pass. When buying a ticket, the mobile phone presents a series of options to the user, such as buying 10 tickets or more. After the user chooses, the system deducts the transaction fee from the user’s mobile phone service provider account through this transaction. Later, the service provider charges the user the corresponding fee. No credit card or cash is required in this way.

When riding a car, the user taps the phone on a contactless reader. If the user purchases a monthly pass, the system passes the verification directly, although if the user prepays a certain number of rides, the system deducts the remaining amount of the ride in the mobile phone memory. Next time, when a fixed NFC contactless reader reads the phone, the updated information is sent to the wireless service provider’s server.
In the membership card project FidBook, mobile phones can be used to collect and redeem membership points. First, the user taps the smart poster with the NFC tag on the mobile phone at the gate of the store to download the membership card data. The user’s mobile phone opens a registration page, and the user then enters the necessary personal data according to the prompts. The rapid membership registration process is a huge benefit to businesses, saving all the paperwork required for traditional membership registration.
After the registration is completed, the user can tap the mobile phone at the cashier terminal of the store when purchasing. Although the Cityzi project will eventually include a contactless payment function, it does not yet exist, so users must still pay by cash or credit card. When the cardholder taps the phone on the reader, the sales data corresponds to the ID code of the phone and the user’s FidBook account on the back-end server. When the user’s consumption amount reaches a certain value, he will receive a free gift from the merchant.
The NFC entrance of the Airtag in the store can be connected to a mobile phone, so that users can download more than a dozen membership items to the mobile phone. Today, Xia Wei, Airtag hopes to install NFC POS readers in 50-60 stores.
