Starbucks coffee machine uses contactless payment technology

  Coffee giant Starbucks is now also using contactless payment technology to better serve customers. Starbucks added a cashless payment terminal from USA Technologies (USAT) to the OEM single-cup coffee machine in its commercial office.

“We provide Starbucks with a very convenient payment method,” said Stephen Herbert, Chairman and Chief Information Officer of USAT. “The new payment system does not require coins or bills. It is purely cashless payment.”


Starbucks Interactive Cashless Coffee Machine

Starbucks purchased USAT’s cash register terminal equipment and embedded it in a coffee machine produced by Cafection Enterprises. USAT terminal equipment can accept traditional magnetic stripe payment cards and 13.56 MHz contactless payment cards with tags that comply with the ISO 14443 air interface standard.Customers can use existing RFID debit cards or credit cards, including MasterCard’s PayPass, Vis’ PayWave, American Express’s
Express Pay and Discover Network’s Zip contactless payment function for payment.

In the next few months, Starbucks plans to distribute 500 of these coffee machines to office coffee machine dealers and coffee sales companies in the United States and Canada, under the name “Starbucks Interactive Cashless Coffee Machines.” The equipment includes the latest version of USAT’s non-cash terminal ePort G8. The ePort G8 uses a security protocol to fully encrypt the data transmitted between the customer’s payment card and the RFID reader.

The new terminal is 65% smaller than the previous version, can be installed more easily, and can work with multiple unmanned cashier devices. ePort G8 can also enable USAT to upgrade its software OTA through the GSM mobile phone network. Due to the different parameters and protocols of different contactless cards, sometimes even the operating system needs to be modified. Now these changes can be done in the air without mechanical changes to the equipment.

Starbucks labeling equipment is the company’s first coffee machine designed specifically for the office coffee industry. According to the coffee industry magazine Automatic Merchandiser, the market for commercial coffee machines is more than $400 million.

Starbucks cashless coffee machine distributors and coffee shops can obtain real-time sales data by logging into a website maintained by USAT, such as how many customers buy what type of products at a certain time of the day.
