RFID has increasingly become a commonly used smart technology in hospitals, and most of the solutions are the transformation of existing facilities and assets. A hospital in the Nordic region is using Xerafy’s high-strength tags, and this application will become the largest medical RFID asset application program in the Nordic region.

DNU Hospital uses high-strength RFID tags to achieve automated management of hospital assets

This hospital named New University Hospital (NUH) is an affiliated hospital of Aarhus University Hospital in Denmark, and the currently deployed solution is currently the largest RFID project in Danish hospitals. The design of the project fully takes into account the needs of future hospital operations. By 2019, NUH Hospital will be built into a super large hospital that can accommodate 100,000 inpatients and 900,000 outpatients. By then, the hospital will deploy 2500 fixed readers to track 350,000 assets.

DNU hopes to use mature technology to help hospitals improve operational efficiency. The RFID solution is a software solution provided by Lyngsoe Systems, a partner of Xerafy, initially aimed at the tracking of hospital equipment. Lyngsoe Systems has selected many different types of passive RFID tags, including Xerafy Cargo Trak high-strength tags, which are used to track carts transporting goods in hospitals. With a reading distance of up to 12 meters, this tag meets the MIL-STD-810F strong impact and vibration specifications. The tag can be easily installed on any asset equipment as long as it is glued. Cargo Trak also has an IP68 environmental rating and is resistant Clean and disinfect.

In addition to reducing the time it takes for nurses to find assets, RFID solutions can also provide automatic alarms for asset maintenance, repair and replacement, as well as automatic reminders for room disinfection. This automatic reminder function is very necessary, because when the patient is discharged from the hospital, the medical staff responsible for disinfection cannot be notified immediately, which virtually increases the waiting time for subsequent patients.

Solutions based on RFID technology have been applied in various links such as hospital warehouses, distribution centers, logistics, wards, and operating rooms. So far, DNU Hospital is tracking 1,000 beds, 74 trolleys, 94 different types of medical equipment, 7,000 sets of hospital gowns and some IT assets. Next, the hospital also plans to track and manage disinfection equipment and equipment.
