Beijing, May 26, 2008-The Canadian Air Transport Security Agency (CATSA) recently signed a contract with Unisys Canada. Unisys is responsible for providing, integrating and managing a new identification management system, using fingerprint and iris biometric technology, to Canada The staff of 29 domestic airports conduct identification.

This new system is based on ImageWare Systems’ commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) products and will replace the current application of the Canadian Air Transport Safety Agency (CATSA) restricted area identification card (RAIC) system. The RAIC system uses biometrics to verify the identity of airport staff, ensuring that only staff who pass the security check are allowed to enter the restricted area, thereby improving aviation safety. The system also enables CATSA to update the security check status of 100,000 airport staff in all airports across the country in real time.

This contract is valid for two years, after expiration, you can choose to extend it for two years. Unisys will provide data management, integration and project management services for the deployment of new versions of RAIC applications. Other services include training after application deployment, training material preparation and technical support.

The RAIC system installs and uses contactless smart cards, fingerprints and iris card readers at the entrance of the restricted area and the registration equipment that communicates with the airport access control system. Airport staff use a card reader to scan the smart card. The card reader can extract biometric data. The user then performs a fingerprint or iris scan to match the data on the smart card.

ImageWare Systems (AMEX: IW), a well-known developer and provider of identity management solutions and a subcontractor of Unisys, will provide its IWS™ Biometric Engine® border management solution. The solution is a web-based multi-biological detection ID management system adopted by the CASSA project. The ImageWare product is the central component of the new RAIC application, responsible for the registration of airport staff, the capture and processing of their biometric data, and the issuance of smart cards that support biometric technology.

The Canadian Air Transport Safety Agency (CATSA) chose to cooperate with Unisys this time mainly because Unisys has made great achievements in providing identity management solutions in Canada. These cases include:

Successfully conducted fingerprint and facial biometric field tests for the Canadian Citizenship and Immigration Department (CIC), and processed temporary visa applications for more than 20,000 students, staff, visitors and refugees in more than 6 months

The Port of Halifax signed a contract with Unisys last year to design and develop a bloodline biometric identification and access control database solution for approximately 4,000 port staff.

Bob Binns, President of Unisys Canada, said: “We are very honored to assist CATSA in its mission to improve the safety of Canadian air passengers. The signing of this contract and our previous work establishes that Unisys provides identity management biometric solutions for governments and businesses in Canada. Leading position.”

Last year, “Security Product & Techonology News” selected Unisys Canada as Canada’s annual security system integrator. The editorial advisory committee of the publication made the selection decision after paying attention to the work done by Unisys for the CIC biometric field test. Unisys selected ImageWare Systems as a subcontractor to provide the IWS™ Biometric Engine® border management solution for the project.

Unisys is a global leader in biometric technology integration, helping companies build secure business operations. Unisys recently announced the signing of a three-year contract with the Port of Los Angeles, responsible for the design and management of an identification and access control system, using smart cards and biometric technology to verify the identity of workers who require entry into the port’s restricted area. Unisys provides passports supporting biometrics and smart chips to the Australian Passport Department under the Australian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade. In addition, Unisys recently developed, implemented and launched a smart card for Malaysian citizens.
