As the global crime rate rises, the number of prisoners in prisons is also increasing, faster than the growth in the number of prisons, which often leads to a prison’s number of prisoners exceeding the capacity of the prison. For supervisors, monitoring prisoners has become an extremely difficult task.

Now Minnesota prison has started to use RFID system to supervise its 1,300 inmates. Since prisoners are aware that their activities are under the strict monitoring of the RFID system, this will prevent them from committing some violations, which is expected to reduce the burden on staff.

This system uses active RFID tags, which are embedded in the wristbands worn by prisoners, and supervisors are equipped with equipment similar to pagers. When a group of racks are found in the prison, the reading terminals scattered in various places in the prison notify the supervisors in time to help them respond quickly. Supervisors hope to use this system to put an end to criminals’ illegal actions. If the prisoner removes the wristband, the system will detect it immediately and notify the relevant personnel.
