RFID technology helps the inventory of surgical instruments

A new technology that can track sponges and surgical instruments during surgery has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
Haldor Advanced Technology Company, located in the United States, developed the ORLocate system to replace doctors in completing the complicated and time-consuming inventory of surgical instruments to improve safety, which is prone to human error.
The system uses radio frequency identification technology to help the surgical team avoid leaving the instrument in the patient during the operation. At present, the cost of this medical error in the United States exceeds US$2 billion annually. It is currently the only RFID-based system on the market that can be used not only to count sponges, but also to count surgical instruments.
The surgical team needs to rely on manual counting to ensure that sponges and surgical instruments are not left in the patient’s body. There are 2-4 incidents of surgical items remaining in the patient’s body every year in major hospitals.
In the Northwood NAMSA laboratory test, ORLocate monitors and locates sponges and surgical instruments with an accuracy rate of 99.8%. NAMSA is the world’s largest medical equipment research organization (CRO) and has laboratories in Germany and Israel. It uses unique RFID identification technology to mark every item used during the operation. The label is the same size as a hearing aid battery. The marked instruments and sponges are continuously and automatically counted through the antenna and application software all over the sterile area.
Before the operation, register the number of items and automatically mark them when they are used. Before completing the operation, the surgical team can be sure that ORLocate has counted every item, ensuring the safety of the patient, and greatly improving the efficiency of the logistics and flow of the operating room.
ORLocate can also be applied to the disinfection treatment and distribution department (SPD) to provide advanced surgical instrument life cycle tracking solutions. This can ensure that the aseptic processing door simply and accurately packs the surgical instruments before the operation.
ORLocate can label and track equipment to maximize the overall productivity of the hospital while also identifying defective and maintenance equipment.
ORLocate can provide the initial and increased number of items at any time, the number of items that have not been put back in place, the number of cleaned and used sponges and the number of the last count, complex counting and sterile inventory management capabilities, which can not only improve the hospital Efficiency, and can ensure the safety of patients.
