The Sunnybrook Health Science Center in Toronto has tested a drug distribution system that combines robotics and RFID technology. This is the first case in Canada. The PharmaTrust Dispensary system developed by PCA Services Inc. will be used in Sunnybrook pharmacies for three months to evaluate patients’ experience with automated drug distribution.

PharmaTrust Dispensary System

PharmaTrust Dispensary can store 220 kinds of medicines, including packaged oral medicines and external medicines. After the pharmacist has processed the prescription, a robotic system uses RFID tags and barcode scanning systems to identify, label and deliver the patient’s medicines. This system can eliminate possible manual errors in the distribution of medicines.

During the testing period, the pharmacist will confirm each drug distribution and provide consultation on the use of drugs to patients who adopt the automatic drug distribution system.
