This is the first integrated use of SAP AII 2.1, Zebra and Symbol RFID devices in the Netherlands.

Sony, Mieloo & Alexander, SAP, Zebra and Symbol have had a comprehensive understanding of the impact of process and RFID technology integration on the organizational structure and technical aspects of logistics operations, and have mastered relevant professional technologies.

The technology used in the project

Zebra R4Mplus Printer/Encoder
Alien Lepton 96-bit label
Symbol AR-400 RFID reader and ANT-400 antenna
SAP Netweaver and Business Warehouse

Zebra, Symbol, Mieloo & Alexander and SAP successfully implemented RFID solutions

Sony Logistics Europe BV (SLE) in Tilburg, the Netherlands, is the European distribution center of Sony Europe. The center stores all series of Sony Electronics products, which are transported by road, sea and air from Sony Electronics’ factories in Europe, Japan and Asia. SLE has a storage area of approximately 80,000 square meters, which can be directly distributed to dealers throughout EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa) and local Sony warehouses.

The consumer electronics industry is a highly competitive industry. In order to realize Sony’s strategy of becoming the “preferred supplier” for all dealers, Sony’s supply chain management department is always looking for ways to improve operational efficiency and take the lead in market competition. . RFID technology is considered to be the most promising means to enhance operations, reduce costs, improve quality and reduce risks. Of course, this technology is also compatible with the development of Sony’s major European customers (such as Metro Group).

With the strong support of integrators Mieloo & Alexander, SAP, Zebra Technologies and Symbol, SLE conducted an RFID test in 2004 and proposed a trial operation plan. After conducting a comprehensive readability test, Sony and Mieloo & Alexander jointly started preparations for the RFID/EPCTM UHF 868 “slap-and-ship” shipment in January 2005. The test It runs between the distribution center in Tilburg and Birkart Logistics in Cologne. Birkart is a third-party logistics provider, responsible for all Sony’s shipping business to distribution centers and stores in Germany to meet the needs of major customers.

The goal and scope of the RFID project

The goals of the RFID project include:

Clarify the impact of RFID technology on the delivery process and the downstream process of SLE;
Understand data volume and data processing issues;
Develop practical knowledge and expertise about RFID hardware and software integration;
Determine the possibility of implementing RFID upstream in the supply chain.
The scope of the trial operation is to send box-level labels for Sony flat screen and CRT TVs from SLE to Birkart. The process includes:

Label trial run

Carton-level scanning of pallets at the door of the shipping warehouse
Scan the trailer
ASN (Advance Shipping Notice)
Cargo receipt check when the goods enter the warehouse
Report and analysis

The scope of the RFID system includes:

Alien Lepton 96-bit label;
Zebra RM4plus label trial run printer;
Symbol AR-400 RFID reader and ANT-400 antenna;
SAP Auto AII version 2.1 middleware/RFID application software (SLE runs SAP R/3 and SAP WMS 4.7);
SAP Netweaver and Business Warehouse

challenge

This is the first integrated use of SAP AII 2.1, Zebra and Symbol RFID devices in the Netherlands. This complex integrated RFID system is based on advanced, just-released components and requires close collaboration between partners.

Results

A project team composed of experts from Mieloo & Alexander, SAP, Symbol and Zebra implemented this fruitful and directly integrated RFID UHF 868 project in the Netherlands for the first time. Currently, SLE operators can apply labels to boxes of 10 to 20 pallets a day. The RFID systems at the entrances of SLE and Birkart’s warehouses can read these tags. SAP’s Business Warehouse report analyzes the reading results on a daily basis. Therefore, the functions of the RFID system need to be continuously enhanced. This pushes SAP, Zebra and Symbol to continuously improve the performance of new products to ensure that new users can benefit from new technologies more quickly. Sony, Mieloo & Alexander, SAP, Zebra and Symbol have had a comprehensive understanding of the impact of process and RFID technology integration on the organizational structure and technical aspects of logistics operations, and have mastered relevant professional technologies. The 2006 RFID trial operation plan will include the second generation of tags and readers, more in-depth internal trial operation of the warehouse, and may also extend the trial operation to the upstream and downstream of the supply chain.
