Siemens IT Solutions and Services branch and Rechts der Isar Hospital in Munich, Germany [Isar河右岸大学医院]At the same time, an RFID application is being tested in the operating room of a hospital.

At present, the two institutions are closely observing two applications: one is to attach RFID tags to the gauze used in surgery, and the other is to attach identification tags to operating room employees. The trial started in March this year and is expected to end in the fall of this year.

There are many kinds of equipment, fabrics, and accessories that hospitals need to use when performing operations, such as scalpels, scissors, cotton swabs, and gauze. All these surgical supplies must be strictly disinfected and placed in the correct location in the operating room. Cleaning agents, cotton swabs, and gauze must be fully prepared and readily available. Using RFID technology, all the items needed for the above-mentioned surgery can be scanned, identified, and recorded. In the initial testing stage, gauze and cotton swabs are affixed with RFID tags, which are read by a fixed reader in the operating room. Once these items are taken out from the storage room until they are finally discarded, they are tracked by RFID and will never be lost for no reason.

During the second test phase, all employees entering the operating room will be scanned. Every employee entering the operating room must wear an RFID card before cleaning and disinfection. This RFID card does not store any personal information, but is only worn on work clothes, indicating that he is a surgeon or an anesthesiologist. The RFID card must be returned when the operating room employee leaves after the operation. All surgical information such as progress, equipment used, etc. can be tracked through the hospital’s observation record monitor. In addition, the system can also record the start and end time of each operation, so as to accurately calculate the duration of the operation, so that the hospital’s observation and recording equipment can give full play to its functions.
