Recently, DataSpan announced that it is implementing an RFID inventory system that will allow NASA to more efficiently manage its more than 250,000 facility assets in research centers and inventory centers across the United States.

The final integrated solution includes Omni-ID’s Gen 2 standard RFID anti-metal tags, Alien’s handheldReaderand EDP, LLC’s custom software, NASA assets involve a wide variety of computer assets, automobiles, cameras, radios, laboratory equipment, calibration components, mobile tracking systems and NASA’s unique asset types.

According to Miguel A. Rodriquez, facility program manager at NASA Headquarters, “With NASA layoffs, we need a faster way to track more liquid assets with fewer people. Several approaches have been investigated. After that, we have been working with DataSpan since 2012 at the Langley Research Center in Virginia.RFIDThe system is tested.

Before DataSpan spent a lot of time to understand our requirements, in order to provide us with a complete, customized end-to-end solution, providing solution design, hardware procurement, customized software installation, SAP integration services and personnel training. The final test result was a passive RFID tag, reader and custom software that saved us about 30% of our time. DataSpan and its team work closely with our central staff to provide a seamless RFID data stream interface with our SAP property management module. “

DataSpan has partnered with PentaSys, LLC to provide EDP software installation, as well as post-installation technical training services. “We retrofitted the EnaSys handheld and middleware to match the existing NASA asset inventory process, as closely as possible to the agency’s security requirements. Fortunately, NASA established a unified barcode-based Inventory system, with which we were able to integrate the newly generated RFID data sets into the SAP backend very easily.”
