Hong Kong Electric Power Company Limited Deploys RF Code Sensor Tags

RF Code and Quantum Data Systems (QDS), an IT solutions distributor based in Hong Kong, have announced that Hong Kong Power has been usingRFIDEnvironmental and energy management solutions.
RF Code reports results show savings in downtime, labor and overtime at the utility’s four main computer rooms.
According to the RF Code, the utility provides electricity to half a million homes and businesses in its area.
A few months ago, they approached QDS for a solution that would help it reduce resource consumption as it spent a lot of money on its data center.

The utility is using RF Code’s 433 MHz RFID 400 sensor tags to monitor its facilities and control all modes of generation, transmission and distribution.
RF Code’s environmental monitoring system integrates QDS’ DC Insight data center monitoring solution with RF Code’s readers and compact, strip, and stick sensors.
The RF Code sensor network can provide continuous environmental data to DC Insight, and if it detects any environmental changes, it immediately notifies the utility’s management team.
According to RF Code., the solution enables companies to proactively address real-time issues.
The company also installed a proof-of-concept (POC) for the first time, deploying 40 RF Code temperature sensors and paired readers and software to a remote computer room.
The RF Code report states that, in the first few months of deployment, the solution has alerted operators to elevated floor temperature increases due to VRF/VRV failure, or improper operation of hot and cold equipment racks and computer rooms, or Caused by insufficient air circulation, etc.
The RFID-based solution replaces the power company’s equipment management system (BMS), enabling basic environmental monitoring capabilities and providing information on server racks in temperature and humidity environments.
However, RF Code explained that utilities found that BMS could not keep up with the scale of their growing IT environment inspections, that integrating their existing back-end systems was too expensive, and that when temperature, humidity and other environmental metrics exceeded acceptable It does not have any way to notify managers when the scope of the system fails, or when the system fails.
RF Code adds that this hinders Hong Kong companies from taking a proactive approach to disaster prevention.
Power companies can now rely on RF Code and QDS to provide an integrated solution to monitor four major computer rooms, and the company plans to expand its facility solution with more than 30 network equipment rooms.
What’s more, RF Code noted that the utility is considering leveraging its existing reader infrastructure, including RF Code’s asset management solution, to track 1,500 assets in the area.
