Touch Automation is the industry’s leading provider of automated distribution solutions for movies, music and electronic games, using RFID technology to manage CD/DVD discs for self-rental in stores. At present, more than 1,000 supermarkets or retail stores in the United States (mostly deployed within the last 6 months) are using Touch Automation’s RFID management system to track rented CDs and DVDs, which has played a role in optimizing the supply chain and client processes . Not only can consumers easily and easily rent or purchase entertainment CDs and DVDs, but at the same time, it can also effectively reduce the risk of theft and loss of goods.

How can retailers benefit from the booming DVD self-service machine market?

Currently, the CD/DVD self-service market is booming. It is estimated that by 2009, the annual revenue of this market will exceed US$3 billion. Unlike other automatic CD rental management equipment, Touch Automation uses RFID technology to track the rental and recycling of CDs instead of barcode technology. According to Brian Fitzpatrick, Director of Engineering at Touch Automation, “The idea of using RFID technology in a rental environment is very new.” Compared with barcode technology, using RFID tags on CDs and DVDs allows retailers to monitor these more accurately. CD rental situation. Because bar code labels are easily damaged, and sometimes they can only be used once.

In most cases, privately-run CD and DVD rental companies generally sign agreements with retail stores to rent retail store space or provide the full cost of deploying the system. Some retail stores install their own rental systems. In any case, the automatic rental management system based on RFID technology allows customers to easily rent movies and CDs without waiting in line or going to a store that rents video tapes.

CD/DVD disc affixed with RFID label to realize automatic management

The automatic service desk instrument provided by Touch Automation is 36*42*70 inches in size and consists of an RFID reader, a robot remote control device that automatically distributes and recycles DVDs, a touch screen, and point-of-sale software. The service desk is connected to the back-end service system via the Internet, so that back-end managers can remotely monitor it. Touch Automation can also provide Internet-based servers for small companies, such as small retail stores with their own service desks. However, in most cases, all RFID and POS electronic payment system data are sent directly to the server of the audiovisual retailer.

Use RFID tags to simplify critical inventory management processes

According to Jan Svoboda, U.S. Marketing Director of UPM Raflatac, Touch Automation’s system uses UPM Raflatac’s BullsEye circular CD/DVD high-frequency 13.56MHz passive RFID tag-following the ISO 15693 standard. Before the CD is sent to the distribution center of the rental company, this self-adhesive label will be affixed to the upper surface of the CD by the CD rental company or audiovisual distributor. At the same time, the DVD’s label will also be written into the DVD’s unique ID number, SKU number, movie name and general plot, and other details by the rental company (any consumer personal information will not be written into the electronic Within the label).

“Tags are used to manage inventory,” Svoboda explained, “to ensure that customers get the movie discs they want and return them on schedule.” With the help of RFID tags, retailers and Touch Automation can monitor and confirm rental, return, and purchase, and at the same time. Evaluate the inventory, and then adjust the inventory process to improve the revenue of each system.

The Touch Automation system allows users to rent CDs and DVDs with RFID tags on their own

Customers only need to use the 17-inch screen on the self-service counter to find the ideal movie, then select it, click “Checkout”, and swipe their credit card on the card reader in the self-service area. At this time, the remote control system of the self-service area will immediately use the RFID reader to search for the disc in the storage area based on the movie list obtained. After it is found, the Touch Automation system will compare the RFID data with the CD data selected by the customer, and if they are consistent, the DVD will be provided to the customer through a transportation channel.

When returning the DVD, the customer only needs to press “Return” as prompted, and the remote control system will transport the disc to the reader, allowing the reader to capture the RFID tag data on the DVD again. If it matches, the disc is shipped to the storage area, and then the point-of-sale software helps the customer settle the fee based on the rental date. The rental-related data will be stored on the host website of the audiovisual company through the broadband network.

Round RFID tags used on CD/DVD

This automatic CD/DVD service desk can handle 550~3500 discs at a time. In addition, Fitzpatrick said: “The system can automatically update the inventory list.” After the inventory is counted, the robot remote control device will move to each disc and read their RFID tags respectively.

In addition, the book market also uses a similar RFID management system, and its working principle is basically the same as the application on tapes, CDs, and DVDs.
