RFID helps car washes to speed up the car wash process

New Jersey car wash factory Deptford Shammy Shine uses RFID self-service kiosks produced by Innovative Control Systems (ICS) to provide faster and more personalized car wash services through prepayment. Since the installation of the ICS Auto Sentry system in January 2008, Steve Bulboff, the owner of Deptford Shammy Shine, said that the average revenue per car wash has increased by $7.28, which is an increase of 18% over the original; faster and more automatic services have made customers feel better. This system is also very satisfactory.

Innovative Control Systems installed an outdoor self-service cash register on each car wash lane, according to Tom Tuohy, the company’s RFID project manager. ICS started to introduce RFID technology into its car wash kiosk a year ago to automate the car wash process. Tuohy said that this system provides a faster car washing speed, which greatly facilitates customers, and at the same time improves the cash flow speed of the car washing factory through the form of prepayment. After paying a certain monthly fee according to the charging standard, customers can wash the car unlimited times.


ICS’ Auto Sentry RFID self-service system

Bulboff said that customers often wait in line for a long time during a full car wash service. Before the RFID system was adopted, customers used cash or credit cards to pay for car washing services, such as basic car washing or a full set of services, including tire washing and waxing. Self-service kiosks make the service selection process more automated.

Before adopting the RFID system for the first time, customers must first show their credit card at the car wash office to establish a monthly payment system. A car wash service costs between 15-60 US dollars. Then, the customer sticks the received RFID sticker on their windshield.

The RFID sticker includes a passive UHF, Gen2 RFID tag, the ID number of the tag corresponds to the customer’s name, selected service and payment information. Customer service agreement information is stored on the car wash server running ICS software; and payment information, such as credit card number, is stored on a remote third-party server running ICS software.

The self-service kiosk manufactured by ICS contains RFID readers to capture RFID stickers on the windshield of customers. The Auto Sentry self-service kiosk includes a touch screen to assist in the payment process. The ICS software running on the car wash server prompts the automatic car wash system to provide a certain car service, such as tire washing or car waxing.

“ICS software instructs us to real-time car wash controllers,” Tuohy said, “turn on the necessary car wash equipment.” The ICS software also transmits the ID number to the computer in the car wash through a wired connection. The computer then sends the data to the server through the Ethernet connection, and the server confirms the payment information.

According to Tuohy, the placement of the label depends on the curvature and color of the car window. The car wash shop recommends that customers stick stickers on the windshield on the back of the rear view. ICS controls the tag reading distance to ensure that there is no cross reading.

If someone attempts to remove the sticker from the vehicle and use it on a different vehicle, the label cannot be used normally.

Bulboff said that the Auto Sentry system greatly speeds up car wash services, which not only improves customer satisfaction, but also increases car wash revenue.
