IBM and Implanet collaborate to use RFID to track implantable devices

IBM and Implanet, a manufacturer of implantable medical devices, have jointly developed the BeepN’Track program to track Implanet products-including knee and hip implants-from the supply chain to the hospital.
BeepN Track uses RFID technology to track the transportation of medical equipment from Implanet to the hospital. Before shipping, Implanet sticks an RFID tag with a unique ID code on the package of a single piece of equipment.
Before the operation, the hospital used a handheld machine to scan the tags of the medical equipment to be implanted, and store the tag information and patient records. The label is given to the patient after the operation so that the patient can know all the information about the implanted device.
The IBM WebSphere Sensor Events software collects label information and sends it to the IBM InfoSphere Traceability Server software to allow Implanet to manage the data and share data with other partners who adopt the EPCIS standard system.
