The tragedy of the rear-end collision of two trains on Shanghai Metro Line 10 due to equipment failure at 14:00 on September 27, 2011. The blood was stained on the scene and it was shocking! According to Shanghai TV News, 260 people were injured in the rear-end collision! The official has apologized to the passengers for this incident. Because of this incident, Shentong Metro commissioned a Shanghai research institute to develop a train auxiliary tracking and early warning system.

The Train Assistant Tracking and Early Warning System (ATP) includes five sub-parts: the system host, display terminal, ranging antenna, radio frequency identification (RFID) antenna, and RFID tag. It can realize real-time measurement of the front and rear distance of trains running in the same direction, and provide drivers with rear-end collision risk warning when the distance between trains is less than a certain safety threshold, and provide safety auxiliary safety guarantee for subway train operation. The RFID radio frequency identification system reads different subway train tags to determine the train’s entry and exit, up-and-down, up-and-down end information, so that the train auxiliary tracking and early warning system can accurately detect the train.

RFID reading and writing equipment began to be selected in 2012. Due to its special application, it needs to work continuously and stably in a harsh environment. The system integrator selected UHF products from most UHF reader manufacturers at home and abroad. Finally, The YXUK5 UHF reader based on R2000 developed by Shanghai Yingxin Information Technology Co., Ltd. was selected, and a lot of customized work was done to meet the needs. The UHF electronic tag chooses an imported large-scale tag, which can be stably read 30 meters in the field environment with the reader.

The installation and operation of RFID equipment began in early 2013. At present, 3 subway lines have been successfully installed and they have been operating stably.
