STMicroelectronics RFID ticketing saves one million in Seoul Metro

The world’s first RFID-based reusable one-way bus ticketing system was recently put into operation in Seoul, South Korea. Using the stable ticketing solution of STMicroelectronics (ST), the world’s leading developer of RFID chips, this system is expected to save about 3 billion annually. The Seoul Metro has served this city of 10 million people since 1974, and in July 2004 it became an important part of the new transportation system that integrates the subway and bus network of the Seoul Metropolitan Government. Now, in order to save more than 450 million paper tickets each year, the supply cost of each paper ticket is about 6.8 won, South Korea’s Seoul Metro will use RFID smart card one-way tickets instead of paper tickets.
In the new system, each passenger only needs to put the ticket price and 500 won deposit into the automatic ticket vending machine, and the ticket vending machine will issue the passenger a smart card one-way ticket. Each ticket contains ST’s SRT512 contactless memory chip. These memory card tickets can be recycled and then issued to new passengers. Recycling and reuse of tickets will save operating companies the cost of manufacturing disposable paper tickets and the negative impact on the environment.
The Seoul Metropolitan Government commissioned Korea Smart Card Co., Ltd. (KSCC), a South Korean smart card issuer, to manage the operation of the new transportation system. STMicroelectronics and KSCC have established a cooperative relationship to optimize SRT512 to support the subway ticketing system.

SRT512 is specifically designed for short-distance applications that meet the ISO14443-B standard and require reusable tokens, such as access control systems, exhibition ticketing, and bus ticketing. In order to maintain efficient operation in these applications, the chip has a built-in anti-collision mechanism to prevent the chip from conflicting with other cards nearby. The transaction speed is even higher among similar products. The on-chip computing unit including dual counters and tear-proof features enable a safe and durable solution for the card body.

STMicroelectronics previously cooperated with KSCC on the T-Money prepaid transportation card project. In addition to being used on buses, subways and taxis, T-Money prepaid transportation can also be used as an e-wallet to pay for small items in Seoul stores. Based on ST19WR’s market-tested contactless smart card from STMicroelectronics, the T-Money prepaid card has been widely used in the past two years.
