Xinghua Internet of Things drug delivery and security system in Xiehe Hospital
[ad_1]
Project Background
With the rapid development of modern hospital pharmacy, how to expand the drug management function of the hospital information system, make up for the defects of its operation function, and further improve the level of hospital drug management, is gradually put on the agenda. The State Food and Drug Administration (SFDA) also promulgated the “Notice on Building a Nationwide Monitoring Information Network for Special Drugs” (SFDA) in August 2007.[2007]No. 482), requiring drug production and operation companies to implement barcode management for such drugs and strengthen the monitoring of special drugs. In the general environment, Peking Union Medical College Hospital, which has always been a leader in comprehensive medical strength in China, took the lead in cooperating with Xinghua to improve the management of special drugs. The RFID drug delivery and safety solutions provided by Xinghua successfully supported the official launch of Peking Union Medical College Hospital’s drug information system, and truly established an information network management model in terms of special drug delivery, medication safety, and inventory management.
RFID drug delivery and safety solutions, customized for every subtle demand
After on-site inspection of the hospital’s drug handling procedures and logistics processes, the different functional departments and facility layouts in the hospital, Xinghua immediately began to deploy the system software and hardware (as shown in the figure below) and the system operation process (as shown in the figure below). The core of the solution is to apply RFID tags to pallets/boxes to ensure safe delivery of special drugs and simple inventory management procedures. While helping medical staff gradually adapt to paperless and automated systems, it also solves the urgent needs of hospitals.
RFID drug delivery and security system software and hardware deployment
RFID drug delivery and safety system operation process
The RFID operation station (as shown in the picture) installed in the drug warehouse and ward/pharmacy is equipped with a touch screen. When the tray/box passes the station, the system will automatically recognize the label attached to the tray and execute the warehouse-in and out-of-warehouse procedures.
What needs to be introduced is that it uses the patented RFID reader G-BOX independently developed and designed by Xinghua, as the core of the entire system, composed of RFID readers, computer terminals, middleware and application software, which meets the multi-functional industrial level Use requirements, in addition to having RFID tag reading and writing functions, it can also record data and monitor the antenna. The advantages of G-BOX are to reduce execution costs and reduce deployment time; improve reliability in harsh environments; improve the overall performance of the RFID system; integrated design overcomes a large number of wiring defects between traditional RFID devices; and the price is only traditional Half of the RFID system.
RFID drug delivery and security solutions make a huge contribution to the medical industry
Guarantee full drug delivery
In the hospital pharmacy, a large amount of medicines (including special medicines) need to be processed every day and transported from the medicine warehouse to the ward pharmacy, outpatient pharmacy and emergency pharmacy through the hospital logistics network, and then distributed to each patient through the pharmacy. The accuracy and safety of the conveying become a concern. Through the RFID operation station and the handheld reader, it is possible to realize automatic, paperless inspection, verification and recording throughout the drug delivery process to ensure the accuracy of the received drugs, and to avoid errors due to human operations, which ultimately lead to extremely serious consequences . In addition, only authorized personnel with RFID staff cards can use and process the system, providing additional security.
Ensure medication safety
Use of expired or overdose drugs can lead to serious adverse reactions. Therefore, it is very important for the life and health of patients to accurately distribute the correct dose of drugs to each patient at the right time and ensure safe and effective drug use. The system’s recording of drug information and patient medication standards, automatic identification of delivery links, accurate verification and collection can effectively reduce the occurrence of medical accidents and relieve medical staff’s medication pressure.
Effectively manage inventory
Drug delivery and safety solutions can assist hospitals in accurately identifying various drugs and according to their input information, effectively controlling inventory and drug expiration dates, so as to ensure the safety of public lives.
Immediate notification of unexpected events
The system’s drug tracking and alarm device will issue a warning to the personnel on duty, showing unexpected events that occurred during the drug delivery process, such as delivery to the wrong place, improper handling, or even theft. In addition to alarms, the system can also notify relevant personnel in a more concealed way, such as e-mail or mobile phone text messages, to effectively prevent larger accidents.
Double harvest of economic and social benefits
The medical industry aims to treat diseases and save people and protect people’s lives. Naturally, the pursuit of social benefits should be the primary task. However, to continue to perform the duty of treatment, we must start from the direction of economic benefits. The implementation of RFID drug delivery and safety solutions will inevitably require hospitals to invest a certain amount of upfront capital, but in the long run, it can effectively prevent the huge compensation costs incurred due to medical malpractice and negligence in the future, and the return on investment is significant.
Sustainable development of RFID drug delivery and safety solutions
Considering future extensibility and scalability, Xinghua builds the system on the basis of the world’s latest EPC Gen 2 standard and Windows open platform, which is compatible with other enterprise application software and meets the requirements of global supply chain suppliers. For example, each special medicine is equipped with a unique RFID tag. When the medical staff puts each medicine on the tray, it can automatically pair with each medicine, realizing a fully automated process. In terms of inventory control, RFID technology realizes real-time monitoring and improves inventory quality and visibility. It can prevent drug out-of-stock, theft and delivery delays, and ensure the validity of the drug. The accuracy and speed provided by these RFID technologies are unmatched by current barcode systems.
The RFID tag has a powerful storage function, which can record important information such as the batch number, expiration date, manufacturer, and production date of the drug. Medical personnel can verify the authenticity of the drug by reviewing the above information. As more and more pharmaceutical companies use RFID to mark drugs, perfecting drug verification is just around the corner.
In the future, this system can be extended to the application of all drugs.
Bright market development prospects
Peking Union Medical College Hospital’s drug information system, supported by Xinghua’s RFID drug delivery and security solutions, has played an important role in the hospital’s special drug management since it was launched in 2008. After more than a year of operation, the project’s success has been deeply domestic The attention of hospital colleagues, and hope that the next step can expand the application of the system to the management of prescription drugs and valuable drugs, and even all drugs.
As a brand-new application of RFID technology, although it has been widely promoted in Western countries, especially in the United States, there are few examples of applying RFID technology to the medical industry in China. Peking Union Medical College Hospital can serve as a model for other hospitals, and it is also worthy of emulation in Hong Kong and Macau. At present, Hong Kong hospitals have launched some pilot studies in various fields, but they have not been formally included in the scope of daily applications. Under such circumstances, the project will make a great contribution to the industry because it demonstrates how to integrate RFID technology into existing technologies and daily applications, while improving service quality and standards, and more importantly, to ensure patient safety.
