Savi RFID portable implementation kit applied to the Afghan Expeditionary Force

Recently, the United States Navy (USMC) placed an order with Savi Technology for 50 portable implementation kits (PDKs) to support the location, tracking and management of RFID-labeled assets of the Afghan Expeditionary Force. The labeled items required for PDK tracking purchased by USMC include supplies such as ammunition, tires, food, and boots.
A single PDK portable device integrates several types of wireless and data collection technologies, including 2D barcodes, active RFID and GPS positioning systems, and satellite communications. The equipment also includes a notebook, handheld, mobile reader, printer, software and communication equipment for asset tracking, goods and personnel lists. In addition, PDK provides active RFID tag read and write functions, and print freight upgrade information on military freight labels.
This type of kit runs in dual-frequency RFID mode, and provides real-time visibility of labeled assets based on existing standards or the Department of Defense’s new standard based on ISO 18000-7 (DASH7). The sturdy design of the products can make them the same as the mobile reader checkpoints, which can be used in any place, including transit points for air, land or sea transportation.
Using RFID, GPS and low-orbit satellite communication modes, through satellite communication with the Department of Defense In-Transit network, field logistics personnel can provide supply requirements to the US warehouse, and the warehouse can better manage inventory receiving and shipping.
The portability of PDK makes it applicable to remote areas (where it is impractical to install fixed readers), allowing military logistics personnel to locate important assets and flow routes in real time.
