  core key
Under the guidance of the advanced technology of the Internet of Things, a fast channel for algae control and water protection has been formed in Taihu Lake.

   Implementation site
In environmentally sensitive areas such as the “Eighteen Bays” of Taihu Lake, more than 10 cyanobacteria intelligent sensing nodes (spherical buoys) have been set up to monitor cyanobacteria in Taihu Lake around the clock.

   Implementation Effect
It has replaced the old method of relying on manual water extraction and laboratory testing. Previously, water samples taken at 6:00 a.m. could not get a water quality report until 6:00 p.m., and the outbreak of cyanobacteria was very rapid. If it was not handled in time, it would turn into a large-scale outbreak within two hours.

Since the beginning of summer this year, there have been more than 50 cyanobacteria gatherings in Taihu Lake, but there has been no large-scale outbreak. As of late September this year, the alarm of large-scale cyanobacteria outbreaks in Taihu Lake has been basically lifted. The Internet of Things technology has played an important role in the effective early warning of cyanobacteria outbreaks in Taihu Lake.

   next step
At present, there are 50 sets of such equipment, and the number of IoT sensing nodes will increase to about 120 sets. Most of Taihu Lake’s waters prone to cyanobacteria will be monitored by the Internet of Things.

   Wuxi “Trinity” Monitoring System

In order to obtain the first-hand information on the water quality of Taihu Lake in a timely manner, in 2009, Wuxi City used the new technology of the Internet of Things to deploy sensors in a large area of Taihu Lake for the first time, and monitored various changes of Taihu Lake water online 24 hours a day through wireless transmission. By the end of 2009, 86 fixed and buoy-type automatic water quality monitoring stations had been set up in Wuli Lake, Meiliang Lake, Gonghu Lake and the coast of Yixing. The total investment is 180 million yuan.

These automatic water quality monitoring stations have newly added monitoring items for chlorophyll, blue-green algae and total phenols, and a report is issued every 4 hours, and a monitoring report can be issued every two hours if necessary.

The floating monitoring station put into use in November 2009 adopts GPS satellite positioning technology and provides working power through solar panels. The water quality monitoring equipment carried by the buoy can quickly measure the pH value, dissolved oxygen, turbidity, blue-green algae and other 7 water quality data of lake water, and automatically transmit the data wirelessly to the rear water quality monitoring platform.

Wuxi City has also set up 21 cyanobacteria inspection points in Taihu Lake, and built 13 cyanobacteria distribution video surveillance systems along the coast, equipped with a Taihu Lake water environment emergency monitoring ship and an environmental monitoring emergency vehicle. At present, the use of flying robots to monitor cyanobacteria in Taihu Lake is being studied, and environmental satellites are used to strengthen remote sensing monitoring.

At present, Wuxi has built 86 automatic water quality monitoring stations, combined with onshore screen control and environmental satellite remote sensing, to form a “three-in-one” monitoring system for Taihu Lake waters.
