Five years ago, Arkansas-based jewelry retailer Sissy’s Log Cabin adopted an RFID-based solution at its Pine Bluff and Little Rock locations for accurate and fast inventory counts. This year’s new branch in the Jonesboro area will also use the RFID system. The RFID system, named Gem-Where, is provided by an RFID company named Northern Apex in India. The system uses UHF tags conforming to the EPC Gen 2 standard, RFID reading and writing sticks, laptops connected to the readers, and Middleware integrated with the original jewelry management system.
Sissy’s Log Cabin jewelry brand started using the Gem-Where RFID system in November 2007. Before the installation of the RFID system, the inventory management of jewelry such as engagement rings, watches, earrings, necklaces, etc. was manually recorded; to ensure their safety, these items were moved from the counter to other safe places every day.
Northern Apex has developed RFID read/write sticks for reading UHF tags affixed to jewelry. As shown in the figure above, the read-write stick is composed of an RFID reader and a read-write antenna. Xixi Jewelry was looking for an RFID solution that could integrate with POS systems and automatically update inventory data.
Once the Gem-Where system is in place, Xixi’s staff can take inventory data at any time. Before the inventory, the ID number of the showcase needs to be stored in the Gem-Where middleware and JCS software. Then, employees read the RFID tag on the jewelry with an RFID reader/writer stick. Through data analysis, staff can clearly identify those misplaced or lost jewelry.
In addition to effectively locating the location of jewelry, the RFID solution uses an RFID read/write stick to search out the location of stolen jewelry (before it leaves the jewelry store, of course). The implementation of the RFID solution has saved 75% of the inventory count time.
The Gem-Where solution is suitable for small and medium-sized jewelry chain stores. It includes middleware, RFID tags, and RFID reading and writing sticks with embedded RFID reading and writing antennas. In addition, it also includes a smart tablet with RFID reading function. for reading RFID smart cards assigned to customers. Customers who come to the store for shopping have an RFID smart card in hand, which is mainly used to store purchased product information and products of interest.
Northern Apex is further upgrading the existing RFID system: the RFID reading and writing stick accurately reads the jewelry tag information through the glass. For now, this is still a challenge.
