Confidex is a professionalRFIDTag supplier, announced that its ISO 18000-6C (EPC Gen 2) passive ultra-high frequency (UHF) RFID windshield tags were deployed by the Colorado E-470 Highway Authority in all of its electronic toll collection systems, dubbed ExpressToll .

According to Confidex, the windshield tag is designed for vehicle tolling and can be installed on the windshield of a vehicle and can be read automatically from a distance of several meters, even at high speeds.

Labels can be customized with surface printing, anti-counterfeiting signs or special programming.

Confidex with RFID chips andReaderPartnered with provider Impinj and incorporated the Impinj Monza 4E chip into the windshield label.

The E-470 highway section runs a semicircle around the eastern perimeter of Denver and leads to Denver International Airport, as well as various communities in the area. According to a Confidex report, the bureau installed ExpressToll technology and systems in 2009, with an average of 3.5 million transactions per month.

The Highways Agency chose ISO 18000-6c-compliant technology because it offers a lower operating cost and complies with national tolling interoperability requirements, Confidex explained.

In fact, the 6C Tolling Operations Committee (6CTOC) is currently promoting passive ISO 18000-6C RFID tags for charging with the aim of forming a national standard.

By 2011, 6CTOC’s four U.S. tolling agencies had adopted the technology: Georgia State Highway and Turnpike Authority (SRTA), Denver-area E-470 Highway Authority, Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT), and Washington State Transportation Department (WSDOT).

Confidex’s RFID windshield tags passed the E-470 Highway Bureau’s nine months of intensive field testing, Confidex said, and the tags are customized to the Highways Bureau’s specific visual and electrical requirements.

RFID windshield tags are also being used elsewhere, including in Maharashtra, India.

For the deployment in Maharashtra, Confidex used custom-made 6C RFID windshield tags to provide automatic identification of heavy goods vehicles at the country’s border crossings, and instant access to vehicle data. (Compiled by RFID World Network)
