Container Centralen uses RFID technology to track containers

In the second half of 2006, Container Centralen, a provider of returnable shipping containers (RTI) and recycling services, began testing the use of EPC Gen2 RFID to track containers used by customers.
As an extension of the company’s RFID technology application, the company recently received 300,000 specially designed laminated EPC Gen2 tags from Confidex. Based in Tampere, Finland, Confidex is a designer and manufacturer of RFID systems. Confidex designed the labels specifically for this application, applied them to a series of laboratory or field trials, and designed a quality control system that automatically encodes and validates the labels during application.
During production, two RTI labels are attached to each container. The tag is manufactured using Impinj’s Monda/ID RFID chip and is used in environments where a large number of items are stored at a very high density. In addition to a standard 96-bit Electronic Product Code (EPC), each chip contains a permanent, factory-instructed secure ID number that links the specific container and its owner. In the retail logistics chain, the label automatically collects data as containers are transported and identifies containers leased to Container Centralen customers.
