ILT’s Smart Septa system uses RFID technology for drug anti-counterfeiting

Headquartered in Rensselaer, ILT has been making medical-grade caps and silicone septa since 1993, said company president Paul Petrosino. The purpose of the septum is to seal the stopper or liner of the bottle and cooperate with the cap to protect the contents of the bottle. The silicone layer on the cap of the hanging bottle is the most widely used place. The company produces 1 billion padded caps annually. Caps and liners are the same as for sealed storage of drugs or laboratory samples in laboratories, healthcare companies or research institutions.
For customers, managing dozens or hundreds of containers is a daunting task. They usually have two needs: identification of the contents of each bottle and anti-counterfeiting needs for drugs or other products.
According to Lenny Diaz, vice president of the company, ILT’s solution addresses both challenges. This Smart Septa system incorporates Serialio.com’s UHF RFID inlays on container caps or well caps, an attachment process that takes place during the septum manufacturing process. The company will sell both the RFID version of the smart septum and the regular version of the septum. The ILT used a Serialio handheld reader to write the tag information and store it in the Smart Septa software. As part of the Smart Septa solution, ILT also sells three UHF handheld readers from Serialio. The three readers are the idChamp 1128 Bluetooth and USB reader, the idChamp 1126 USB reader, and the Scanfob Ultra-BB2 Bluetooth and USB reader, said Dave Boydston, president of Serialio.com.
After receiving the Smart Septa-lined bottle caps, ILT customers can use the RFID reader to read the label information and view the relevant information details of the label binding through the Smart Septa Portal software. However, users need to set up traceability information requirements and authorized user list on Smart Septa Portal now.
When using a Smart Septa bottle provided by an ILT customer, company employees can place a handheld reader on the bottle and view a list of labels read (using either a handheld reader or a PC). The employee can then update the item’s receipt status within the software. In addition, the user can enter information about the contents of the bottle, storage time, and other details you want to track.
During the trial, when reading the bottle label information, the researcher can not only view the relevant information, but also use the Serialio reader to enter relevant information (which can be a description of the test in progress or the results). The user can then export the data to a spreadsheet.
The solution can also be used to prevent counterfeiting of goods. In order to check the authenticity, the recipient of the item such as the distribution center or the hospital can read the bottle label information and compare the label ID information in the Smart Septa software, so that the user can identify the authenticity. Typically, these caps are permanently attached to the bottle, but for removable caps, ILT also adds a protective layer on top, Diaz said. At the same time, the bottle also has a built-in RFID tag, and the corresponding ID number is also bound to the Smart Septa tag ID to ensure that the bottle cap is not replaced.
Currently, several laboratories are using the system to manage test tubes, tracing the entire chain of storage items and their movement. In addition, the company will provide independent software solutions for users in need.
Prices for Smart Septa liners or caps vary by capacity. Software can be paid on a monthly basis and by the number of users used. While several customers are still testing the technology, the company says Smart Septa caps and software are already commercially available.
