The health management function in the health park is realized by using RFID. The specific method is to bury an RFID reader in the 3.75km long river bank walking road. When the user hangs the RFID card around his neck for a walk, the amount of exercise will be automatically measured according to the user’s movement distance, walking speed and time.

Measurement records are automatically registered on the U-Health park website. As long as you register as a member, users can freely view their records.

  Free service to residents

Yangjaecheon U-Health Park is operated by the Gangnam-gu Health Center, and health management services are provided free of charge to residents of the area. Gangnam District is a famous wealthy area in South Korea. U-Health park is one of the administrative services launched by the district to promote reasonable diet, prevent adult diseases and maintain health.

After making an appointment via the Internet or by telephone, users can receive a health check, and they will not eat or drink from the night before the check. There is a “U-Health Park Visitor Center” at the entrance of Yangjaecheon Walking Road, where basic health checks are conducted. The center is open Monday through Saturday from 9 am to 6 pm and has a resident staff of three nurses, exercise managers and nutritionists.

Health check and membership registration takes about 40 minutes. In addition to blood tests such as blood pressure, blood sugar, and cholesterol, the examination items also include basic physical examinations such as cardiopulmonary function and endurance. After the inspection, an RFID card with personal information recorded will be issued to the user.

The exercise manager will suggest how much exercise the user should do based on the inspection results, and explain to the user how to walk and how to use exercise equipment. After that, the user can hang the RFID card around his neck and go for a walk.

There are about 400 regular users

According to the Jiangnan District Government, as of October 2011, about 600 people had gone to the visitor center for health checks and received RFID cards. Among them, there are about 400 people who regularly use the card to exercise. In order to encourage everyone to stick to sports, the district government will organize group walking activities every Saturday morning.

The promenade is located by the river, so there are places where the RFID reader is not buried in the ground. In these places, KIOSK terminals are installed on the ground. There are 13 places in total, and users can also check data such as activity levels through these terminals. . At the same time, the terminal will also display some suggestions in line with the user’s situation, such as “the walking time should be extended a little longer”, “it would be better if the walking speed is faster”, and so on.

There are also sports equipment set up in many places by the river. However, the use time of these exercise equipment and the amount of activity during use cannot be automatically detected. Therefore, the user must enter the data on the website or the KIOSK terminal by himself/herself, such as what kind of sports equipment is used and how long it has been used.

Services will also be provided using NFC-equipped smartphones

The Gangnam-gu Health Center said it has been advancing preparations since 2012 so that users can enjoy health management services through NFC-equipped smartphones instead of RFID cards hanging around their necks. Currently, more convenient usage methods are being explored, such as using NFC and smart phones to provide exercise suggestions based on the user’s current health status, or linking health management with other services, etc.
