Italy L’Oreal has installed the RFID system for a year, and the company has never had a warehouse forklift collision. Called the Traffic Collision Assist System (TCAS), it is provided by systems integrator Deles Matic, and the RTLS technology is provided by Essensium. Essensium’s SafeTrack collision avoidance RTLS system is well known in Europe for reducing the risk of worker injury caused by automated or manned vehicles getting too close. The RFID system from L’Oreal, Italy, includes battery-powered RFID tags provided by Essensium, readers, software stored on the company’s servers, and an integrated early warning system provided by Deles Matic.
The L’Oreal Italia factory is located in the city of Renate, and the warehouse of the factory is busy and complex. The company takes facility safety very seriously and management wants to prevent any accidents from happening.
Usually, this warehouse has a lot of traffic, especially when there is a lot of business. There are two lanes between the warehouse shelves, one for pedestrians and one for vehicles. Some of these areas also have obstructions such as conveyor belts. In places where there are no obstacles, the flow of people can also cause visual errors. L’Oreal Italia approached the company and ultimately chose Essensium’s solution, said Riccardo Chersoni, operations director at Deles Matic.
Previously, L’Oreal considered the use of an infrared system solution and an active RFID tag solution. When a specific area of the vehicle manhole cover will sound an alert. The test results for both options were disappointing, and there were many false alarms during the test, which also let people down.
In August 2013, the company began deploying TCAS technology, with each worker wearing an Essensium nylon safety vest with a 2.4GHz RFID tag attached. In the future, these tags will be built into safety vests.
Dirk Devisch, sales director of Essensium, explained that in order to ensure a long transmission distance, the tag uses a transmission pulse technology that transmits ultra-wideband. After the reader receives the unique ID number contained in the tag, it will upload the data to the server through the gateway.ReaderThe reading distance is up to 250 meters.
In addition, a similar battery-powered tag is attached to each forklift. At the same time, Essensium’s software will confirm the location of the forklift, sense the speed of the forklift, and issue an alarm based on the actual situation. The content of the response to the alert will also be recorded in the system according to the rules. L’Oréal wants to remind drivers to avoid accidents when the aisle is occupied.
Each driver also wore a badge with a unique ID number. When he gets into the car, the system records this information. If the driver approaches the forklift but does not get on the vehicle for a long time, the system will also issue an alert.
If the forklift approaches a pedestrian or vehicle, the software recognizes this event. Then, the red light at the intersection will come on, attracting the driver’s attention. If the driver has not slowed down or braked, the buzzer installed in the forklift will automatically sound. At this time, if the driver has not braked, the power supply of the forklift will be automatically cut off.
Not only does the company intend to use the system to prevent accidents, it also intends to record data in the event of a near-miss. In this way, companies can better train their employees. In addition, management can use the software to view the movements of employees and vehicles in real time.
In total, the company has installed 48 readers in warehouses, 50 tags attached to employees and 10 tags attached to forklifts, Chersoni said. “The system helps prevent accidents, and I think the equipment is enough,” he added.
In the next step, L’Oreal plans to install the system in other warehouses, and the specific time has not been determined.
