RFID technology helps IDMeters to realize the safety management of water meters and water pipes

Uruguayan company IDMeters recently released UHFRFIDSolutions for water, gas, electricity and oil companies. The system is mainly used to identify water meter and pipeline problems, and help maintenance personnel to carry out maintenance services.
This solution from IDMeters includes software, pipe water meter labels and a handheld reader. Currently, the system is in the testing phase. Meanwhile, Enrique D’Amato, president of IDMeters, said the solution is equally applicable to governments as well as private companies, helping them to pinpoint the location of pipes, identify water meters and collect data more quickly. By identifying whether water meter data has been tampered with, the system also keeps businesses safe from fraud.
IDMeters and its sister company, Identis RFID Systems, provide various low frequency (LF), high frequency (HF) and ultra high frequency (UHF) RFID solutions for South American government customers for animal tracking and industrial applications. For example, Identis RFid designs and manufactures handheld readers for LF tags on cattle. In addition, the company also invented the dual-frequency tag Urutag, which can read the ID number on the cow more quickly. Urutag contains both LF and UHF chips and antennas, which allow operators to read ID numbers on their bodies at far and near distances.
According to D’Amato, the Urutag was developed according to the needs of farmers, which both have a long read distance and meet the low frequency requirements of the Uruguayan government. D’Amato said: “UHF tags in cow ears provide faster and more accurate readings, offering the possibility of real-time reading of herd numbers. This gives farmers a lot of benefits that LF tags cannot. .” At present, Urutag has not been put into use because the government has not approved the use of UHF tags. Therefore, IDMeters is waiting for a clear policy from the Uruguayan government.
Identis RFid also introduced a solution called Pegasus for tracking weapons and other security-critical items. The system includes a custom software, Identis-designed RFID tags, and Pegasus readers.
About four years ago, a utility company contacted Identis about using a modified Pegasus system to manage water pipes and water meters. The company aims to ensure that indoor and outdoor water meter data is not tampered with and is read accurately.
In response, IDMeters contacted Identis to jointly develop the system, which is currently in the testing phase. The solution includes a handheld reader provided by Convergence Systems. IDMeters offers two types of labels: a linear seal and a plastic ring. High memory tags can also be used to store water meter data. In addition, D’Amato said, the company can also provide LF or HF tags if the customer desires.
Workers need to regularly collect status information for specific pipelines and provide maintenance services. Without RFID technology, workers would need to manually set up and record water meter data and ID numbers. If employees are not careful, these error messages will be stored in the company’s system. This will cause many unnecessary problems.
Using a utility retrofit Pegasus system, IDMeters H-Series linear seals can be attached to every water, gas, and electricity meter. This way, if someone tries to modify the meter data, the linear seal will break and the staff will find out.

M series plastic ring labels are used to identify pipes. A ring tag with a unique ID number is attached to each pipe. If employees need to repair underground pipes, they can carry a handheld reader and set it to STL counter mode to obtain information on the location of nearby pipes. In this way, employees can reduce a lot of pipe hunting time and avoid unnecessary drilling.
Currently, IDMeters is planning to expand the water meter plumbing solution to other regional markets, D’Amato said.
