Express delivery in just one easy scan

Traditionally, express parcels are tracked manually, which is inaccurate and inefficient, labor-intensive, and paper waste is severe throughout the entire back-end operation.

But now, with the advent of wireless communications, the Internet, and more information and services available to customers, customer expectations for service have increased. They expect to see the entire delivery process of the package, from the courier signing the package to the final destination of the package, and the cycle time is short.

SingPost recognizes the rising expectations of its customers and is determined to meet and exceed their expectations. In 2004 it was running a different system, which was later found to be unsuitable for existing business operations, the outdated barcode readers were outdated, and the network service provider that provided the public wireless network was obsolete.

SingPost conducted a six-month consultation with its information technology partner, NCS Private Limited, to define the project criteria and develop the entire process of the project. After a rigorous series of device definitions, initial investigations, and testing, the contingent, based on several factors including product reliability, customer service, and technical support, concluded that the Intermec 760 handheld mobile computer was the barcode scanning tool for its Speedpost business execution. ideal choice. Intermec handheld mobile computers can withstand drop tests, water resistance tests, battery power consumption when connected using GPRS (General Parcel Radio Service), and have reliable on-site barcode scanning performance. In 2005, SingPost optimized the Speedpost delivery service by using 300 Intermec 760 handheld mobile computers running Newspage’s patented software Tracks III to track packages based on barcodes on consignment notes.

The Intermec 760 and 761 handheld mobile computers feature Intel XScale™ microprocessors and run Microsoft Windows Mobile 5.0, an advanced embedded operating system. This rugged computer features built-in wireless LAN and Bluetooth® connectivity, as well as an industry-leading scan engine. This high-resolution display enables users to see the display clearly in harsh outdoor environments or industrial lighting conditions.

If a Speedpost customer needs a domestic package delivered within 1.5 hours, simply call the Speedpost hotline. Information about the service request will enter the control center system immediately. After receiving the requested information on Intermec’s handheld mobile computer, the courier will arrive at the customer’s location, scan the barcode on the consignment note with the mobile device, and the information will be wirelessly transmitted back to the control center system.

Successfully derived business expansion

Currently SingPost can handle 10,000 courier tasks per day. The Intermec 700 series of handheld mobile computers have helped field couriers and their operations teams improve overall productivity, a dramatic improvement over previous systems. On-site couriers can now collect and deliver more packages per day with greater precision. In addition, SingPost customers can now track their packages online on the Speedpost website and even get email or SMS (Short Message Service) alerts.

Following the deployment of 300 Intermec 760 handheld mobile computers, SingPost purchased 60 updated Intermec 761 handheld mobile computers. SingPost has trained couriers on the use of the Intermec 760 and 761 handheld mobile computers. SingPost also found that Intermec’s equipment was easy to use and reliable, which complemented the services provided by Intermec. Handheld mobile computers also help SingPost make better use of human resources.

Prospects

The Intermec 760 and 761 handheld mobile computers will serve SingPost for many years, and the company will find ways to broaden the use of these devices and explore alternative package tracking technologies.
