UT Dallas Commencement Uses RFID Technology

In May 2014, the University of Texas at Dallas celebrated graduation useRFIDTechnology. Ultra-high frequency (UHF) based EPC Gen 2 standard RFID technology ensures that family members and friends will know when their loved ones are on the graduation stage when they are watching the graduation ceremony, or via the Internet.
The system was designed by electrical engineering student Johanan Rodriguez and his classmates Timothy McGuire, Julian Torres and Jasmine Singh as part of the Engineering and Computer Science Advanced Design Program at the Erik Jonsson College, who took to the stage to shake hands with the professor, who The system will display the graduate’s name, education and major experience on the screen.
Information is via an Alien ALR-9650Readercollected by scanning the RFID badges of each graduate speaking on stage.
The reader wirelessly transmits the information to the computer system, and then projects each student’s information on the screen.
The classmates who developed the system posted an article on the university’s website and said to the students that they did so in part because university graduates, being on stage for such a short period of time (about three seconds), made it difficult to make Their families have seen graduates struggle from entering college to receiving their diplomas.
“What is scary,” Rodriguez told reporters. “For three seconds, your parents won’t even recognize you.”
According to the article, the system was developed through advanced programming, a graduation project where they apply what they learned in a traditional classroom to life.
The team chose to deploy RFID technology because it would not interfere with graduation ceremonies or reduce the process of speaking out the speaker’s name.
The article states that Rodriguez and Torres on the development team had to understand software and graphics, and while McGuire and Singh graduated in computer engineering, they also had to learn to understand the RFID technology needed for the project.
