Westover Associates deploys RFID system to help prevent infectious diseases

When visiting four Westover Associates dental hospitals in Colorado, Georgia and Mississippi, many patients worry about contracting an infectious disease. Any underlying infection can have a big impact on patients undergoing cancer chemotherapy. Therefore, hospitals have been looking for a technology to prevent patients and staff from contracting the disease.
Ultimately, the hospital chose an RFID system provided by Medical Grade Innovations Technologies (MGI). The system, called WelloFocused, features an RFID desktop kiosk, the WelloStation, where employees and patients can take temperature measurements.In addition, the WellFocused system includes built-in stitched onto specialized antimicrobial clothingRFIDLabeled medical scrubs to track personnel temperature data in real time.
In this way, the medical center can know the temperature of the staff in real time and detect sick people in a timely manner so that measures can be taken to isolate them. At the same time, medical centers can collect and better manage historical data on the timing and frequency of infections. Westover Associates installed the system at the Jackson campus earlier this year. Now, campuses in Atlanta and Colorado have also begun deployments.
Dentist Brock Westover, founder of Westover Associates, said hospitals have been looking for a staff-based approach to early warning of infections. He noted that both patients and staff need to be protected from infection. Because of its work in the mouth, dental hospitals spread faster than anywhere.
MGI President Murray Cohen said MGI’s antibacterial garments have built-in Fujitsu A522 UHF RFID tags. Each employee has a fixed set of clothing, and the clothing label information contains the employee’s name, relevant identification information and a unique ID number, which are stored in the WellFocused software. Employees can take pictures and upload image information at WelloStation. In this way, when employees enter the office through the WelloStation, managers can read the photos to determine that the clothes are not wrong.
In addition to the camera and temperature sensor, each WelloStation deploys an Impinj Speedway Revolution RFID reader with a built-in Laird antenna. In addition, WelloStation also installed software for connecting temperature and RFID data and uploading to WelloCloud cloud software.
When patients and staff enter the hospital, they all need to pass through the WelloStation. The person then needs to follow the prompts to look at the two circles on the display with both eyes. In this way, the WelloStation can measure a person’s temperature information by means of infrared radiation. These data will be stored in WelloCloud.
When employees enter WelloStation, built-in RFIDReaderThe tag ID number on the garment will also be read. Then, the temperature data, personal photo and ID number will be uploaded to WelloCloud together. Managers can log into the software to view employee names, onboarding photos, recent photos, and temperature data. Through photo comparison, the hospital can prevent employees from wearing mixed clothes and judge relevant permissions. If an employee develops a fever, the employee will be assigned to work in a special area or take time off to go home.
Since the patient is not wearing RFID-tagged clothing, the system can only simply check the patient’s temperature. If a fever is detected, the patient will not be admitted to the hospital and will be rescheduled for treatment. The system will also capture photos during the first treatment of the patient, which will effectively prevent insurance fraud.
Both patients and staff have benefited from the program, Westover said. He said: “We are all afraid of infection. Especially with the recent Ebola epidemic. Infectious diseases can be transmitted through saliva. Everyone in the dental hospital knows the risk. Now that the hospital has deployed WellFocused, these fears are gradually reduced.”
Cohen said the WellFocused system can also be used in factories and schools. RFID technology can be used for data collection and analysis, such as age-specific prevalence statistics. Of course, these are only at the conceptual stage at the moment.
