The Russian Ministry of Industry and Trade plans to apply RFID chips to clothing and footwear products. The plan applies to members of its customs union, hoping to curb counterfeit products on the market.
According to Georgy Kalamanov, Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade, the pharmaceutical industry has begun to adopt a similar system, which is also used to curb counterfeiting, and he believes that all members of the Customs Union (Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan) should adopt this system.

According to the Federal Customs Service (FCS), since 2007, Russia has exposed 70 million counterfeit products, compared with 4.8 million in the first half of 2013; the value of counterfeit products confiscated in the first half of this year amounted to 5.6 million rubles.
According to FCS, most of the counterfeit products exposed are clothing, footwear and toys.
