DHL Express and Metro Group are launching the first national RFID project in France. Beginning in the fall of 2008, all goods sent by the company to 89 Metro’s self-contained wholesale stores in France will be affixed with RFID tags and their data will be read along the entire supply chain.
Each year, 13 million pallets will be affixed with RFID tags to enable contactless automatic monitoring of the supply chain. Through this step, DHL Express and Metro Group began to launch the largest RFID project in French retail logistics.
Metro Group is the first retail company to participate in this innovative project of DHL Express. So far, most of the members of this project are technology companies.
John Allan, the financial director of Deutsche Post World Network and a member of the management committee responsible for global business services, said: “This project marks the end of the RFID technology pilot. It determines the development trend of the entire logistics industry. RFID is ready for daily use.” Hao Express Company hopes that this large project can send a signal to the entire retail logistics field and other logistics industries.
Zygmunt Mierdof, CEO and member of the management committee of Metro Group, said: “Metro continues to promote the deployment of RFID technology internationally through this project. By expanding our RFID operations to France, the whole of Europe will realize the benefits of this technology.”
In the RFID project, all goods shipped from the six DHL food logistics centers to self-selected wholesale stores will be affixed with RFID tags. In the loading operation, the data in the RFID tag will be read and transmitted to each store by electronic means. When the goods arrive at the receiving point, the label will be read again, and the data will be automatically checked against the order.
Compared with traditional methods using barcodes and barcode scanners, RFID can speed up the loading and unloading process. In addition, automatic reading technology improves the accuracy of the logistics process, improves visibility, and makes management easier.
This RFID project is the result of a long-term and good working relationship between DHL Express and Metro Group. This working relationship advances the development of technical projects and brings commercial success. In July 2008, Metro became the first retailer to participate in the DHL innovation project. Since 2004, DHL has been a partner of Metro’s “Future Store Project”. (Text/Jiang Bingkui)
