Valmet is committed to the research and development, production and sales of tractors, and provides related services for them. Valmet is the leading tractor manufacturer in the Nordic region and the second most popular brand in Latin America. The company’s history has been producing tractors since 1951, and its long history can be traced back to 1832.

Recently, Valmet adopted RFID technology to automate the material supply process and consumable buffer management, and applied RFID to the Suolahti tractor manufacturing plant. The RFID system is deployed by Vilant Systems, which can issue replenishment orders in real time.

RFID realizes the automation of goods receiving, real-time tracking of conveyor belts and RFID gates on the channel, and maintains the level of material inventory. The system improves the efficiency of loading and unloading consumables and reduces manual errors. Real-time material inventory information and shipping data can prevent material shortages.

Valmet installed RFID readers on forklifts to read tags on pallets of goods, from the material buffer to the consumption area, and trigger replenishment orders. The RFID system adheres reusable RFID tags on the tray. The goods receiving station and the internal conveyor belt are equipped with RFID readers to automatically receive goods. Valmet’s RFID software controls the RFID reader and integrates the information into the ERP system.

Vilant server 5 RFID software system displays real-time inventory information of consumables buffer. For a single consumable, the buffer quantity can be tracked. Buffer volume, replenishment orders and shipment volume are all visible. Information can be obtained from Valmet’s RFID readers and readers deployed to suppliers. The visibility of the consumable flow provided by the RFID system can improve the availability of consumables in the factory. Automated cargo receiving saves labor costs. Real-time visibility improves the control of the flow of goods and makes inventory information more accurate. Real-time replenishment of material consumption improves inventory cycle time. All in all, the RFID system improves the consumables process. Improving the flow of consumables is the key to modern lean production. According to Valmet’s supply chain manager Timo Husso, the company has expanded RFID technology into new areas.

Timo Husso said, “This RFID system has been in preparation as early as 2003. We are very satisfied with the RFID test results and have experience in deployment. Then new application areas quickly appeared. RFID has been used to track production and internal consumables movement. Automation. Valmet’s RFID system consists of Vilant Server 5 RFID software and Vilant’s RFID hardware products. Before deploying RFID at production sites, the system is piloted by Valmet’s supplier Metalpower. The IT system is jointly deployed by Tieto and Liaison.”
