POSCO (Pohang Steel Corporation) uses RFID to track metal parts
[ad_1]
POSCO (Pohang Steel Corporation) recently deployed a proprietary RFID logistics solution called “Smart Factory System”, using customized UPM BonqBone UFH RFID tags to track and trace metal coil products through delivery to customers. This automation solution, which aims to improve the accuracy and efficiency of major operations, is part of the country’s movement to become a leader in the ubiquitous sensor network field, and is funded by the Korean government.
The use of RFID technology in a rolling mill has to face unique challenges, because there is metal everywhere in this environment, which will affect the reading of RF information. POSCO leveraged its experience in implementing RFID worker safety projects in 2009, designing its own logistics system, and ensuring that it integrates seamlessly with existing manufacturing systems. The company uses an improved UPMDogBone UHF tag, which is a flag tag with two antennas, which are vertically attached to the heavy metal coil and perpendicular to the curved surface of the article. The company solves the problem of readability through the location of the label, ensuring that POSCO can take advantage of the excellent performance and low price of UPMDogBone paper labels for a large number of inventory management. The metal coils are labeled during the packaging process, read when they are moved to the warehouse by a crane during storage, and read when they are ready for shipment.
Currently, the company uses RFID tags to identify coil products it produces for seven customers in its factories in Guangyang and Pohang. Starting in October 2011, POSCO will label all products produced, with a total of more than 2 million parts each year. POSCO’s RFID system consists of UPMDogbone UHF tags, portable industrial slab computers, fixed RFID readers mounted on cranes and factory gates, enterprise resource planning manufacturing execution system and a server. Because the RFID system is seamlessly integrated with the customer’s own planning solutions through the Internet, customers can obtain POSCO product information in real time, and use the data to plan and fine-tune their own product operations.
POSCO uses this RFID logistics system to automate the inspection, packaging and transportation of its metal coil products. In addition to providing product tracking for the company, the system reduces packaging and transportation errors, improves customer satisfaction, and reduces costs by 1.4 million US dollars per month.
Han Ku Park, Deputy Director of POSCO’s Maintenance Technology Department, said: “POSCO UPM RFID smart factory system proves that RfFID technology can optimize important operations for manufacturing companies even in challenging environments. We look forward to further expansion of RFID technology. Go into our supply chain to further improve competitiveness.”
UPM RFID Sales Director Edward Lu said: “We are honored that POSCO has selected UPMDogbone RFID chips for this important project. The performance of these chips at POSCO once again proves that UPM DogBone chips have good reading performance under adverse environmental conditions. , Improve efficiency and save costs.”
