Members of the Madrid Shorthorn Sports Club now use RFID technology as tickets, as well as vouchers to obtain services, use fitness equipment, and purchase goods and services.

The club has 6000 members and has tennis courts, paddle courts, basketball courts, swimming pools, spa facilities, children’s areas and canteens. All members have cards, bracelets or watches embedded with 13.56MHz passive RFID tags complying with ISO15639 or 14443 standards. So since the club installed the RFID system two years ago, the technology has eliminated the loss of expired members’ illegal entry. In addition, the use of RFID tags in the membership club has become more convenient and faster, and the income has also been increased. It can save 95,000 US dollars per year. .

The RFID embedding facility is provided by Legic Identsystems. The club installed four RFID-controlled turnstiles or doorways, one at the entrance of 10 tennis courts, one at the underground parking lot, and the other two at the entrances of the men’s and women’s locker rooms. RFID-controlled wardrobe locks are also installed in the dressing room.

At the turnstile or doorway controlled by RFID, Legic’s interrogator reads a member’s and controls the member’s right to enter the venue. Marcel Brand, marketing manager of Legic, said that for those projects that require reservations, such as SPA, RFID interrogators will not allow unbooked members to enter the venue. These related member data are stored in the club’s back-end management system.

The RFID interrogator in the locker room is wirelessly connected to the back-end, while other interrogators are directly connected to the back-end via wired. RFID equipment and background management are implemented by Gantner, a partner of Legic.

Before the RFID system was used, due to the large number of members, the Shorthorn Sports Club had many problems in managing members that were difficult to solve. For example, in a courtyard with 10 tennis courts, members usually gather in the courtyard waiting to play, and cannot control who uses the court when. With this RFID system, the number of people in the venue is effectively controlled: only when there is a free space, qualified members can pass through the RFID-controlled turnstile.

In the locker room, members can use RFID cards, watches or bracelets to obtain a wardrobe. You can also use them to buy food and drinks in vending machines. In the second half of this year, the club also plans to install RFID POS machines in the cafeteria. By then, RFID interrogators will be installed in the bar and staff’s mobile phones.

The RFID membership card, watch or bracelet contains a unique ID number, the corresponding member information is stored in the club’s backstage management system, and the member’s admission right is stored in the interrogator. Brand said: RFID membership card, watch or bracelet is also an electronic wallet. Because of LEGIC’s technical strength guarantee, the security of members’ personal information and electronic wallets can be ensured.

Since the installation of the RFID system in 2004, the club members have grown steadily. Brand said that members like to use RFID bracelets and they are comfortable to use. In the next step, we plan to install RFID vending machines so that members can use their ID numbers to buy fast food and drinks.
