Confidex Corona™ RFID Tag
The challenge
Control complex product portfolios and identify and manage customized parts, track and trace key items in the process. The old tracking solutions were too cumbersome and not reliable enough.
Gain
Improve the utilization of assets and resources by minimizing waiting time, reducing waste and rework.
Lean operations and intelligent automation improve cost efficiency and productivity.
The final product meets customer requirements and expectations.
RFID tags help Volvo Cars realize intelligent “intelligent manufacturing”
Now, more and more car buyers will choose a series of customized solutions when buying a car. For automakers, this means that many of the cars they make are unique. Due to the installation of various models on the same production line, the ability to accurately and reliably identify each vehicle during the production process is critical to the current management of the diversity in manufacturing.
Volvo Cars, as a world-renowned car manufacturer and a pioneer in modern car production, decided to use RFID technology to improve the car production process. Through the application of Confidex RFID tags, Volvo Cars has realized the full tracking of vehicles in manufacturing from welding, painting to final assembly.
Use a set of solutions to track the entire production process
Before applying Confidex RFID tags, Volvo Cars used three independent systems to identify and track vehicles in manufacturing: including barcodes in the manufacturing workshop, active RFID tags in the paint shop, and large barcodes in the assembly line . The combined use of the three systems not only causes high maintenance costs, but also lacks sufficient reliability. In the entire production process, even minor problems can affect the output of the entire factory.
Based on Volvo Cars’ high requirements for quality and performance, Confidex has developed a powerful passive UHF RFID tag that can be used in various harsh environments throughout the production process. In the manufacturing mileage, after the vehicle leaves the welding workshop, the body will enter the painting line. The harsh environment of the painting workshop determines that its requirements for labels are very high. The car body must first go through the corrosive electrolyte, and then go through a series of layered painting and high-temperature drying ovens. The most important thing is that after this series of harsh environments, Confidex’s label performance has not been reduced, and it still maintains its readability and reliability.
Confidex CORONA™ RFID tags meet its high standards
The Confidex Corona™ label is permanently installed on the vehicle chassis before the start of the manufacturing process. Through this label, the vehicle can be reliably identified at all stages of the manufacturing process. After the vehicle is manufactured, the tags will also remain in the vehicle, thus eliminating the process of collecting, cleaning and testing used tags. The Confidex Corona™ label has been used in Volvo car manufacturing production lines since 2008. Over the years, it has been fully proven that the label can withstand complex and harsh use environments and is suitable for a complete automobile manufacturing process.
Confidex provides a series of industry-standard RFID hard tags and soft tags on the market, including products designed specifically for the automotive industry.
