Disney uses passive UHF tags that comply with EPC standards to track performance costumes worth $1 million, and effectively manage performance costumes in parks and on cruise ships.

For inventory managers in Disney theme parks and cruise ships, inventory of clothing is an easy task. The staff only needs to transport the clothing they need from the warehouse to the self-service counter based on RFID technology, swipe the work badge, and then leave. The RFID solution installed in most of Disney’s theme parks last year has managed clothing assets close to US$1 million, greatly improving the efficiency of clothing tracking and inventory counting, and helping to increase the visibility of clothing cleaning and maintenance.

In just one year of installing the solution, the inventory count time was greatly shortened from 180 hours to 2 hours, and the accuracy rate of inventory count increased from the original 85%-90% to 100%.

RFID reader in the warehouse

In the past few years, Disney has adopted high-frequency tags for clothing tracking management, mainly for tracking the laundry process. In order to optimize the application effect, the label supplier recommends the use of UHF labels. At present, Disney has successfully tested the Fujitsu WT-A611 passive EPC Gen 2 standard UHF RFID tag (rubber jacket, dedicated to tracking the washing process). Through testing, Disney has a better understanding of UHF tags of WT-A611 model, which not only has good waterproof effect, but also has an expanded reading range and makes inventory counting easier. In fact, in the supply chain, UHF tags have been widely used.

Based on the previous barcode management system, Disney has developed RFID software to store the data and related information read by the reader.

30-40% of the clothes that Disney buys from clothing suppliers have embedded tags, and the other 60-70% need to be added later. The label is generally placed in an unobtrusive and easy-to-read position on the clothes. For garments with hard material, adhesives should be used to attach the label to the garment.

Disney’s self-service counter, which has a built-in RFID antenna for reading tag information

After the actors go to the warehouse to select suitable clothes, they will be brought to the self-service counter. The RFID reader installed in the service counter will read the RFID tags of the clothes, and the barcode reader will scan the number on the actor’s work card and pass the two information through The network is sent to the background management system. At the same time, basic information such as the name of the borrower and the model of the clothes will be displayed on the screen of the service desk for verification.

When returning the clothing, the actors only need to put the clothing in the chute where the RFID antenna is installed, the information on the clothing tag will be updated, and then transported to the laundry room. Throughout the process, the tag will record the code of the laundry room and the time of entry and exit.

Through the analysis of the collected data, information such as the location, frequency of use, and detailed suppliers of the clothing can be obtained. More importantly, it speeds up the company’s inventory counting efficiency. Before installing the RFID system, scanning the bar code to carry out inventory counts, which costs a lot of manpower and material resources, and is inefficient. Now, only two workers can complete an inventory within an hour, and the operation process is simple.

Disney has a total of 25 clothing warehouses and 40 self-service counters, inspecting approximately 23,000 pieces of clothing every day. According to statistics, Disney has tagged 3 million pieces of clothing and accessories, and tracked assets of US$160 million.

Since the RFID system was installed last year, it has saved Disney more than $1 million in costs.
