Ubisense has successfully completed the installation and application of the new Tool Assistance System (TAS-Tool and Equipment Assistant System), which is located at the BMW production base in Regensburg, Germany.

The basis of TAS is the Location Identification System (LIS). According to the meaning of the original text, it is a system dedicated to identifying the location and name of production equipment. The cooperative development unit of the LIS/TAS system is Ubisense and IBS. In fact, it integrates Ubisense’s real-time positioning system and IBS’s software system. It can connect BMW’s existing information system with the positioning system. .

The tool and equipment assistant system used in the Regensburg production site can automatically identify the vehicle being assembled and its neighboring automatic production facilities such as intelligent tools and test equipment. Therefore, the TAS system can eliminate the scanning of the barcode process sheet on the assembly vehicle (because this action itself does not produce any value), and eliminate the errors caused by manual scanning of wrong assets. The working principle of this system is to continuously evaluate the spatial relationship between the automated production system and the assembly vehicle in real time. Once the moving process equipment enters the specified range of the assembly vehicle, or the assembly vehicle enters the specified range of an automated equipment, the relevant information will be issued. The action instructions.

The LIS/TAS system fully integrates BMW’s information system through the IBS communication platform. The communication platform can provide all necessary interfaces for related systems. It is particularly worth mentioning that it includes the management of process equipment and vehicle assembly and the transmission of process equipment control instructions through IP telegrams. Relevant work instructions will load a specific program needed to assemble a vehicle on a certain process equipment, or start an automated system to serve a specific vehicle assembly. This article refers to typical process equipment such as torque wrenches, riveting machines, diagnostic equipment, and programmable logic controllers.

This system has been fully put into production at the Regensburg vehicle assembly plant. There are a total of 120 process equipment systems, which can produce 1,000 vehicles per day. The 3D assembly vehicle real-time positioning system is completed by the Ubisense label attached to the assembly vehicle. These tags themselves are small transponders, and their location is determined by fixed sensors installed on the production line and ultra-wideband radio frequency technology. The location and identification information is used for related event analysis, and the information is directly sent to BMW’s information system at the same time. The advantage of ultra-wideband technology is that it can send ultra-short pulses and consume very low energy (less than 0.1 milliwatt per square meter), that is, it will not have a negative impact on other systems and will not harm the health of employees.

Andreas Lehner, project manager of BMW in Regensburg, said: “After the introduction of the LIS/TAS system, we can avoid the trouble of reading vehicle identification barcodes. All the goals of the project were completed on time and the funds were within budget. From a value creation point of view It seems that this project has been completely successful.”

Richard Green, CEO of Ubisense, was very pleased with the results of the project. He said: “Our company and our partner IBS are the only RTLS system manufacturer, which can meet all the requirements of BMW. The current LIS/TAS system is for automobile manufacturers. The unique equipment in the industry has obvious advantages. I am very happy to receive praise from BMW.” (Written by Zhuang Biaowei)
