The Service and Logistics Department of Minho University uses handheld RFID readers and passive EPC Gen2 tags to track 20,000 pieces of furniture and computers, greatly improving the efficiency of inventory management.

The University of Minho in Portugal uses an ultra-high frequency RFID system to track office furniture, electronic supplies, and sports equipment throughout the school. The RFID solution used comes from Creativesystems. The main target of this solution is SASUM, the school logistics service department.

Before the RFID system was adopted, it was necessary to manually record the condition of school assets, which was time-consuming and laborious, and it was impossible to track the location of the assets.

The passive EPC Gen 2 RFID tag used in the solution is provided by Alien, and the size is 7.6cm*2.5cm. The data management software in the plan is compatible with the school’s ERP system and is used to store and manage label data.

The staff holds ATID’s AT870 UHF reader for inventory counting, and uploads the data to the back-end database via the wired network. The hand-held read-write device can also mark the data of the equipment that is broken or needs to be repaired, and the staff can query the information of the items that need to be repaired through the database. The staff can also use the reader to find lost items. In the process of inventory counting, if items that have been lost or placed in the wrong position are found, the handheld device will send out an alarm to remind the staff.

After the installation of the inventory solution based on UHF RFID technology, the school’s inventory management efficiency has been greatly improved, and the expected goal has been exceeded.
