IBM and Matiq use RFID technology to track the Norwegian meat market

IBM announced the cooperation with Matiq to use RFID to track poultry and meat products from the farm-the supply chain-to the supermarket shelf. This system is the first RFID food tracking application in Scandinavia.
Matiq is an IT company owned by Nortura, Norway’s largest food supplier. Matiq and IBM jointly develop and manage RFID devices to track the Norwegian food market. The plan will use RFID tags to ensure that the food in the supply chain is kept in its best condition.
With this solution, Norwegian suppliers and supermarkets will use EPCIS-compliant software (allowing parties to share RFID data) to monitor and analyze the entire food supply chain, improve supply chain efficiency, reduce costs, and improve food safety.
“Consumers are paying more and more attention to food quality, safety, source and traceability. This forces food manufacturers to track every aspect of food processing to ensure food safety,” said Bergquist, President of Matiq.
For retailers, they can use RFID data to track food inventory, replenish goods in time, and avoid shortages. Retailers and suppliers can also respond to the market in a timely manner based on the buying habits of consumers prompted by RFID data.
