As a provider of logistics and storage services, TCA is mainly responsible for the import and export of cargo at Argentine airports. It is currently conducting a two-month trial to better experience the benefits of RFID technology and evaluate its expenses.

The trial started in May, using UHF Gen2 RFID tags from Alien Technology. When the cargo enters the airport and enters the two cold storage areas (-8º and -20º degrees Celsius respectively), TCA employees stick labels on the pallets and boxes of the items. TCA hopes to use approximately 4,000 uniquely coded RFID tags in the test to track a variety of refrigerated goods, such as vaccines, fruits, flowers and chemicals.

TCA cooperated with Argentine RFID system integrator A1-Tec to install RFID terminals at the entrance of each cold storage area, including two antennas installed on both sides of the entrance. For this test, A1-Tec integrates Alien tags, readers, Zebra RFID label printers, and A1-Tec middleware Well Edge that manages and filters RFID collected data.

Currently, TCA has not shared the collected data with customers or business partners. However, if the test is successful, TCA said it will expand the application of this technology in other operations at the cargo terminal, such as tracking baggage and container equipment (ULD) during transportation and loading on airplanes.

Many airports around the world are testing and applying RFID technology to improve baggage handling procedures, enhance security and simplify resource management. Some airports are using RFID to track luggage, such as San Francisco International Airport, and airports in South Korea and Europe. In addition, the Federal Aviation Administration uses RFID to locate cables and pipes 5 feet underground at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport in Atlanta to identify the different types of equipment they represent and their owners.
