IT-Austria, which operates a large data center serving the Austrian Ministry of Finance, reported sales of 165 million in 2007. The company introduced RFID technology to track IT assets throughout the product life cycle, from purchase to installation, use, management, and disposal. The project was completed at the end of 2008 and was deployed in three different data center stations in Vienna, including about 10,000 labeled components, server racks, IT hardware, and other office equipment.

The project started in early 2007, but it took some time to implement, because IT-Austria wanted to label a large number of equipment in person for security reasons. Once the system was completed, IT-Austria and his project partners launched a short-term training to demonstrate how to use handheld devices, and how to use workstations to manage data, print RFID tags, and collect reports.

According to Windischbauer, IT-Austria has benefited a lot from this. Equipment identification is more efficient, manual operations are further reduced, inventory counts are faster, and the ability to optimize asset-related capital through scheduling replacement or increasing investment has also improved. He also said that the company is considering in-depth implementation of some projects, such as the use of RFID to manage the company’s internal desktop computers.
