Jungheinrich’s ETV 214 reach truck with RFID technology used in cold storage

Jungheinrich successfully deployed the cold storage logistics RFID technology solution for the Stadtbackerei Junge pastry chain, making this 110-year-old but modern enterprise more efficient and more dynamic. In addition, in addition to improving logistics efficiency, Jungheinrich’s solutions also greatly improve production and warehousing safety. In the spring of 2009, Jungheinrich successfully deployed a customized RFID solution for Stadtbackerei Junge: the RFID reader was installed on the fork rack of the Jungheinrich ETV 214 reach forklift, and the refrigerated forklift was equipped with a Wireless PC and barcode scanner (both with integrated heater) to identify tray ID. The transponder is installed in the storage slot of the shelf. If the storage slot is on the floor, the transponder is pasted on the floor.

The forklift driver, not the warehouse management system, decides where to store items.

The specific operation process is as follows: information labels including item information and barcode ID are affixed to the trays used for storing items in the stocking department. After scanning the pallet ID, the item information enters the warehouse management system (WMS). After the reach truck driver transports the items to the cold storage, the items can be stored in any storable location. When the driver is ready to unload the pallet, he only needs to press the button on the terminal display to activate the RFID reader located in the middle of the left and right forks, and read the transponder on the storage slot or the floor while storing the items, thereby removing the pallet. The ID is linked to the storage location.

This information will be automatically transmitted to the WMS system so that it “knows” the exact storage location of all items in the warehouse. Because these storage locations are not pre-designated by the warehouse management system, the forklift driver can freely choose the storage location of the items. When the item needs to be taken out, the forklift driver picks the corresponding pallet according to the instructions of the WMS system, and the RFID reader reads the transponder again, and at the same time eliminates the stored information about the pallet in the WMS system. This means that not only the pallet storage space is vacated in the warehouse, but also a storage location is added to the system accordingly.

“The Jungheinrich solution has further improved our logistics efficiency,” said Tim Elsholz, assistant production manager at Stadtbackerei Junge. Since the completion of the project in the spring of 2009, the company has felt a significant increase in efficiency. This solution further liberates the productivity of warehouse staff, while greatly improving production and storage safety. Elsholz explained: “With this solution, we can make a more precise and perfect production plan based on the inventory situation.”

All parties involved in the planning and deployment of this solution agree that this is a successful project and a model of multi-party cooperation. The entire project is based on advanced logistics technology and aims to provide first-class services. “We have dealt with many mechanical engineering companies,” Elsholz said. “Some companies have mediocre service levels, some are not bad, but Jungheinrich’s service levels can be called’excellent’!”

Jungheinrich is a world leader in material handling equipment manufacturing, warehousing and logistics engineering. It has now become a production logistics service provider and can provide customers with a full range of forklifts and racking systems. The scope of services covers the entire internal logistics. Jungheinrich was founded in 1953 and is headquartered in Hamburg, Germany. The company’s shares can now be traded on any German stock exchange.
