McCarran International Airport carries nearly 70,000 passengers and more than 460 take-offs and landings every day. According to the Airports Council International (Airports Council International), it is one of the seven busiest airports in the United States. The use of two terminals, 93 gates, and the ever-increasing passenger flow attracted by the magical power of Las Vegas has enabled the airport to achieve double-digit annual growth in recent years. Such rapid growth, as well as the directives issued by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) after September 11 to improve airport security, require airports to improve the efficiency of passenger registration and the registration process, and to better protect the personal safety of passengers and employees.

Challenge: The ability to ensure passenger safety needs to be improved as soon as possible

When McCarran International Airport decided to improve the safety and satisfaction of customers, they also realized that choosing and implementing the best solution in just a few months is an extremely difficult task. With the need to take immediate action for a comprehensive and in-depth inspection, the baggage handling process quickly became a major issue of primary concern.
The airport has conducted extensive investigations and studies to find solutions that can replace traditional baggage handling and tracking processes. They quickly discovered the many advantages of RFID. So they chose Symbol Technology of the United States to design and implement solutions for their passenger safety and satisfaction issues.

The main advantages of RFID in the transportation industry

The main advantages of RFID in the transportation industry are: enhancing passenger safety; increasing visibility of luggage/cargo; reducing operating costs; improving customer service and customer satisfaction.

RFID luggage tag system

Symbol Technology and McCarran International Airport set out to establish an efficient, low-cost and accurate baggage tracking system to meet the requirements of the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) to screen all passengers’ baggage. By using embedded explosives detection and screening equipment, the team established a new process to automatically track all passengers’ luggage, thereby ensuring the safe flow of millions of passengers at the airport.
The new system enables McCarran Airport to achieve almost 100% accuracy of baggage tracking, and the baggage status can be grasped from beginning to end. RFID tags are printed at the ticketing center and affixed to the luggage. Each tag has a unique identifier, which will be read during the process of putting the baggage on the conveyor belt, conveying it to the screening machine, and finally transporting it to the corresponding aircraft. The workflow is shown in the figure.

Shipment and Receipt of Goods

The implementation of this system has brought convenience to the dispatch and reception of passenger goods at the airport: it can be automatically processed during loading and unloading; it reduces the need for manpower; speeds up the processing of goods; and directly reloads and automates; Automatically generate a 100% accurate electronic cargo manifest.
Storage and implementation

In the process of baggage storage, the implementation of the tagging system makes the baggage storage position correct; the baggage retrieval speed is faster; the order error rate is reduced; the baggage loss rate is reduced; at the same time, the baggage order completion rate and time are improved.
Task and resource management

In terms of task and resource management, this system needs to complete the following tasks:
1. Automatically update the task of each resource;
2. Improve the automation and accuracy of baggage control;
3. Improve the real-time monitoring of operations;
4. Automatic handling and classification;
5. Automatic and accurate sorting and packaging.

Evaluate and implement available RFID technology solutions

This technology planning application solves data collection/analysis problems and establishes a basic data source for airport operations. When evaluating RFID technology at an airport, it is necessary to understand several key issues to avoid technology mistakenly entering a dead end.
1. RFID technology that complies with EPC standards;
2. Reader platform with upgradeable software;
3. A system that can manage large amounts of data;
4. Applications that can be expanded with the continuous expansion of system deployment;
5. What may be the ultimate goal is to collaborate with partners who can provide more in-depth RFID support and have global operations.

Today, McCarran International Airport has more passengers than ever before, but the speed and efficiency of services are higher than ever. Although the passenger flow at the airport is growing endlessly, according to the feedback from the airport, passenger satisfaction has been rising in a straight line.
