In order to adapt to different types of engine parts, the company provides transport boxes of different sizes and materials, such as metal, plastic or wood. Engine component providers need specific types of shipping boxes to meet the order requirements of different customers. If there is a problem with the shipping box, the work of the assembly line will be restricted.
The previous RFID system tracks each shipping box entering and leaving the maintenance office, and records the use status of the shipping box by reading and storing data. The low-frequency tags used in the solution can only be identified by Daher’s own system, and Microsoft Excel is used to manage RFID data, and the entire processing process is time-consuming and labor-intensive.
Later, Daher updated the original solution and adopted passive EPC Gen 2 UHF RFID tags and fixed readers. The reading of the tags is not affected by the material of the shipping box (whether it is metal, plastic or wood). The label used in this scheme has higher requirements than the previous label, can withstand a clean environment, and needs to be resistant to water washing and a pressurized water vapor environment.
In 2007, Waer provided the Waerlinx warehouse management solution to Daher. Three years later, Waer installed passive EPC Gen 2 UHF RFID solutions for several Daher customers and monitored Daher’s assembly packaging services. In the process, approximately 2,000 Daher trolleys were tracked. In the end, Daher chose an ultra-high frequency system instead of a low frequency system to manage all the recycle shipping boxes.
When the company tests the RFID system, the relevant data read is stored on the cloud server. Until the end of 2013, before the formal installation and deployment of the program, a detailed inspection of the software and hardware was carried out.
First, install the Smartrac DogBone tag to the outside of the box. The unique ID code in the label is associated with the serial number of the box.
When Daher receives an empty shipping box from the assembly line, he reads the label data and updates the shipping box’s status to “in”. If a transport box needs to enter the isolation period, the label is read again and the status is updated to the special maintenance state. In addition, the cleaning and maintenance process also need to read tags, and the tags are read using Motorola Solutions FX7400 readers.
If needed, the tag reading location can be added at any time. Waer software can not only display the location of the shipping box, but also ensure the rationality of parts delivery.When the aircraft component supplier prepares to ship the component assembly to the repair shop, it passes throughRFIDIf the reader is missing, the system will issue a warning.
In November last year, the new UHF RFID system went online. Daher standardizes the relevant operations and data of the shipping status of the shipping box. The system reduces human errors and implements a data sharing mechanism among Daher, customers, and suppliers to ensure that the location of the shipping box is exactly what they expect.
In the future, Daher plans to install a touch screen at the label reading point to facilitate on-site confirmation of the number of shipping boxes and the reading process.
