On May 8, 2015, Boeing announced that it has deployed Zebra’s real-time positioning system (RTLS) to ensure the safety of personnel working on mobile operating platforms when painting new aircraft.

The system uses UWB tags and receivers to automatically capture data during exercise, providing information about athletes’ performance, such as the time spent fighting for the ball, as well as the speed and distance of the individual running. “Boeing told us that they want to ensure that workers are safe when the aircraft is painted.” Stelfox said. The company and Zebra jointly designed a system that hopes to prohibit movement on mobile work platforms when workers are not safe.

Zebra started development work in early 2014, and it took about six months to come up with a feasible solution. In late July 2014, Boeing began using the system in its six hangars in Seattle and Renton.

Deploying the solution, Boeing installed Zebra’s UWB receivers in the hangar and issued UWB tags to workers. The location of each worker wearing a tag in the hangar area will be displayed on the map of the MotionWorks software.
