Overview

The Langley Research Center (LaRC), one of the most senior government agencies in the United States, is NASA’s oldest venue center. Since its establishment in 1917, the leading center has concentrated most of its efforts on aviation research to improve the safety, efficiency and development of aerospace vehicles. LaRC has always been the best center for space training hubs, Mars landing project support, and earth science experiments to support a series of NASA-led missions.

Realizing that the patentability and mission criticality of the experiments conducted by its institution requires an enhanced asset tracking support, the NASA team found a highly reliable and flexible RFID asset management solution to help ensure data security and protect equipment.

challenge

Government agencies and commercial companies also face similar problems, how to track key assets within the management agency. These assets are part of the largest investment that any business or institution can make. Similarly, NASA’s LaRC also needs a better way to realize the inventory management of thousands of key data center assets, and at the same time realize the management of expensive testing and laboratory equipment circulating between different NASA sites.

process

The existing difficulties encountered in data center and highly liquid laboratory asset tracking and identification all point to the need for new methods. The LaRC team realized that the current physical inventory management is not only costly, time-consuming, but also poor in accuracy. In addition, the barcode labels currently in use can no longer be read, which further reduces the accuracy rate; and it is impossible to locate key assets among multiple factories on a more real-time basis.

Based on these challenges, NASA conducted a validation process and evaluated several options to introduce more efficient solutions. As a government agency, they recognize that any program they choose must be optimal, so that they can meet the performance they need while controlling budget constraints and meeting compatibility requirements.

solution

NASA adopted the recommendation of Dataspan to install Omni-ID’s RFID solution. This solution uses passive UHF RFID high-quality tags that can work on the surface of metal and non-metal assets. It uses a handheld scanning device with an integrated software platform to provide Visual inventory and reporting capabilities.

Implement

NASA needs to integrate and implement environmental asset requirements for data centers and laboratories. The RFID solution implemented by Dataspan for NASA relies on the successful integration of the CS101 handheld reader and three different types of RFID tags.

Outcome/benefit

A complete integrated RFID solution effectively assists asset inventory management and tracking, and also creates many significant process efficiencies.

-NASA’s project manager pointed out at the end of the project that the speed of asset inventory management has increased by 80%

-The inventory management accuracy of movable laboratory assets reaches 100%

With the savings in the efficiency of the cost process, the return on investment period of the entire project is only 18 months. Based on these successful examples, the program can be applied to a large number of NASA sites and application environments after adjustment.

“After applying this RFID solution, we confirmed that we have completely achieved cost reductions, more effective management of data center assets, IT equipment outside the data center, and laboratory testing equipment in circulation.”-Steve Mercier-Advanced System Engineer, NASA
