SMARTRAC is a leading manufacturer and supplier of RFID devices, and has been determined to be the supplier of RFID PRELAM prepaid card chips for the Cairo Metro Project in Egypt.

The ordering task is completed by MasriaCard, which is SMARTRAC’s local partner in Egypt and a leading smart card and RFID solution provider in the Middle East and Africa. MasriaCard also recently won the honor of being a contactless card supplier for the Cairo Metro Agency.

Wolfgang Schneider, the head of the sales department of SMARTRAC, said: “I am very pleased to be able to cooperate with MasriaCard, an experienced local partner, in this project. Based on our long-term work in the supply of RFID chips for mass transportation systems around the world, it shows that our RFID chips are the best Suitable to support an effective mass rapid transit system.”

SMARTRAC company provides PVC PRELAM chips, which are then packaged by MasriaCard to produce finished metro payment cards, which are issued to passengers by Cairo Metro Corporation.

PRELAM is a registered trademark of SMARTRAC, and it is also the core component of an RFID smart card. There are all necessary electronic devices inside, including chips and antennas. The difficulty in making this type of chip is that the functions of the chip and the antenna cannot be affected by the subsequent card making process and printing operations. This contactless card chip production technology is based on the company’s patented wire-embedding technology, and practice has proven to be very suitable for large-size applications such as contactless cards.

Currently, Cairo’s subway system has two operating lines, and the third line is still under planning. The annual passenger volume of these two lines reaches 700 million, and the average daily passenger capacity is 2 million.

Compared with contact bills, contactless RFID cards have many advantages when used in the Mass Rapid Transit system. Since ticket verification does not require direct contact with the reader, the subway management department can save a lot of maintenance costs for mechanical wear and tear of the mechanical ticket inspection mechanism. In addition, the current non-contact ticket inspection is faster than manual ticket inspection (ticket cutting), which reduces the waiting time of passengers and facilitates passengers to enter the station.
