U.S. Carolina Medical Center expands RFID use

Mobile Aspects announced that the Carolina Cardiovascular Institute at the Carolina Medical Center has expanded the use of iRISupply. IRISupply is a clinical resource management system that manages medical equipment and supplies through RFID technology. This cabinet-type system was first put into use in the cardiac catheterization laboratory to store, track and manage expensive items such as Drug-Eluting Stent’s Impression Paste and PTCArang Air Tube.
Now the institute has expanded the application of this system, installing 26 sets for other cardiac catheterization laboratories to manage those items, while powering the psychological laboratory to manage pacemakers and ICDs.
The institute uses these additional equipment to expand the use of this technology to help improve charging accuracy, avoid product expiration, optimize inventory management, and further improve work quality. Through the initial application of iRISupply, the institute estimates that it can save about 65,000 US dollars a year.
Dennis Chadwick, Technical Director of the Institute, said: “We first used iRISupply in the cardiac catheterization laboratory to evaluate the extent to which the use of RFID technology can improve the use of medical equipment. IRISupply is part of the Mobile Aspects One System of CARE solution, which uses identification information technology to automate the hospital’s clinical resource management process.
