Guangdong Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau adopts RFID to supervise Hong Kong vegetables

Vegetables exported to Hong Kong from the Mainland accounted for more than 80% of Hong Kong. The quality of vegetables supplied to Hong Kong from the Mainland has attracted much attention. Guangdong, a major vegetable exporting province to Hong Kong, adopts new electronic technologies and innovative monitoring methods.

The Guangdong Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau has adopted the most advanced international radio frequency identification technology ─ RFID technology to implement the whole process and seamless food safety traceability management, which has been affirmed by the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine. Currently, this technology is being piloted in Panyu and Dongguan vegetable production bases for export to Hong Kong.

The Guangdong Bureau’s innovative inspection and quarantine supervision adopts the most advanced international radio frequency identification technology-RFID technology to record various information of vegetables supplied to Hong Kong from planting to consumption, thus realizing the whole process of vegetables from farmland to table, seamlessly. Food safety traceability management has effectively strengthened the close cooperation and information exchange between Guangdong and Hong Kong.

At present, most of the vegetables exported to Hong Kong are Dongguan, Huizhou, Zengcheng, Shaoguan and Qingyuan, among which Dongguan is the majority, accounting for about 70%. The Guangdong Bureau has taken effective measures to strengthen the management of vegetables exported to Hong Kong to ensure the safety of vegetables. The latest figures from the Guangdong Inspection and Quarantine Bureau show that on January 11, 2010, the Guangdong Bureau supplied 57,564 batches of vegetables to Hong Kong, 376,600 tons, and 6,508. 10,000 U.S. dollars, an increase of 11.96%, 16.13%, and 37.4% respectively year-on-year. At present, there are 158 vegetables and 55 processing enterprises in the jurisdiction of the Guangdong Bureau, supplying more than 150 vehicles to Hong Kong every day, with about 1,140 tons.
